Hi everyone! So I’ve decided to create my own page dedicated to skin, hair, & nails!
A little bit about me:
My name is Maria Villegas, but most everyone calls me Tuli. I am a board certified Dermatologist practicing in deep South Texas. I was raised in Lyford then left the big city to attend college at Baylor University (Sic ‘Em!). I received my Doctorate of Medicine from The University of Texas Health Science at San Antonio. I continued on at UTHSCSA for my internship and dermatology residency training then moved back home to the Rio Grande Valley to practice.
A question I get often: Did you always want to be a dermatologist?
No, but I thank God every day that He made me see the light! Since as early as I can remember I planned on being a general surgeon. It wasn’t until the second half of my third year of medical school that I rotated through general surgery. I LOVED being in the OR, but I HATED how exhausted I was. The tipping point was when I was at dinner with my husband (fiance at the time) sitting in a booth at Applebees’s and I, no joke, fell asleep at the table. I realized I worked too hard in medical school to be that tired for the rest of my life. I had already rotated through most of the specialties and didn’t like any of them, so what was I going to do!? Then God showed me dermatology through my dear med school friend, Alex. She had just started dating a dermatology resident in New York (they’re now married by the way) and she, being my best friend at that time, knew how well I had done in school and on my STEP exam and suggested I talk to Danny about dermatology. I knew NOTHING about dermatology. In medical school we got zero exposure to dermatology and no one ever talked about dermatology because it was this mythical unobtainable specialty that no one ever got accepted into due to the competitive nature of that specialty. At the beginning of my fourth year of medical school I signed up for a rotation with the dermatology department, and well, the rest is history…The day I checked my email and saw that I had matched into dermatology is one of the best days of my life.
I love my job and it’s weird calling it a job because it doesn’t feel like one. I’ve been working for the VA the last 8 1/2 years. Though it's been very rewarding caring for our veterans, there is change on the horizon for me. Stay tuned for more on that in a few weeks!
This page is meant to educate on the importance of skin care based on facts, my personal opinions, and humor. I hope you enjoy!
