Get to know Physician Assistant Lisa Briones!

Inspired by her father’s dedication to service through his work at the Brownsville Police Department 👮‍♂️, and her younger sister’s childhood health challenges,Lisa felt a strong calling to medicine from a young age. Frequent visits to Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi 🏥 inspired Lisa to one day be the provider making a difference.

What Lisa finds most rewarding in her work is helping patients recover and hearing they’re doing better after treatment . That moment of healing and connection fuels her passion for healthcare each day 💙.

When she’s not in clinic, Lisa enjoys staying active with regular workouts 💪, having weekend carne asadas with her family 🥩, and cheering on her favorite football team during the season—Go Dallas Cowboys! 🏈

If she hadn’t gone into medicine, Lisa might have pursued life as a professional chef or musician. She has a love for cooking (especially her perfected Thanksgiving turkey recipe 🦃) and earned the position of UIL All-State Alternate bassoonist in high school 🎷

Lisa proudly serves both English and Spanish-speaking patients at our Brownsville location. We’re lucky to have her on the team! 💙🧡

Constipation in children is more common than you think — but when is it time to seek help? 🤔🚽
It’s not unusual for kids to go a day or two without a bowel movement. But if your child is:

🔴 Going fewer than 3 times a week
🔴Straining or in pain when trying to go
🔴Passing hard, dry, or pellet-like stools
🔴Complaining of belly pain, bloating, or not wanting to eat
🔴Having accidents (encopresis)

…… it may be more than just a phase. A pediatric GI specialist can help get to the root of the issue and provide relief — in a gentle, kid-friendly way. 💙

Colonoscopy Prep Tips for a Smoother Experience 🩺🧃

Getting ready for your colon screening is a key step in protecting your health. While the bowel prep can be the toughest part, these simple tips may help make it easier:

❗️*DO NOT overeat the day before your bowel prep day*

❗️*START drinking clear liquids the evening before your prep day*

❄️ Chill your prep solution to improve the taste

🥤 Use a straw to reduce aftertaste

🍋🍦 Rinse your mouth with clear liquids, suck on lemon slices, or enjoy a small scoop of *water-based* ice cream between sips

🐌 Drink the solution slowly to help your stomach tolerate it better—chugging may cause nausea or discomfort

⏰ Follow your provider’s instructions, including whether to split the dose—it can make a big difference

🚻 Stay near a restroom, as the effects can start quickly

Have questions about your prep? We’re here to help—just give us a call at (956) 365-4400 📞

🧠 Your Gut and Brain: A Two-Way Conversation 💭

Did you know your digestive system and brain are in constant communication?

This link is called the gut-brain axis—a direct line between your gut and nervous system. That’s why emotional stress can show up as physical symptoms like nausea, stomach cramps, or that familiar flutter we call “butterflies.”

💡 Here’s how your mood can affect your gut:

✅ Stress can disrupt digestion, causing diarrhea or constipation.
✅ Anxiety may boost stomach acid, leading to heartburn or indigestion.
✅ Depression can shift your gut bacteria, impacting how you absorb nutrients.
✅ Ongoing stress may contribute to chronic conditions like IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

✨ Fun fact: your gut has its own network of neurons—often called the “second brain.” That’s how closely your mental health and digestion are linked.

🧘🏻‍♀️ What helps keep the connection healthy?
Mindfulness, a well-balanced diet, staying hydrated, and moving your body regularly can all make a big difference. And if your symptoms stick around, don’t ignore them—your gut may be sending signals your brain hasn’t decoded yet. ❤️

Understanding Colon Cancer: Prevention Starts with Awareness 🩺

Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, happens in the large intestine—often as small, noncancerous polyps. Over time, some polyps can become cancerous if not detected & removed early.

Regular screenings, such as a colonoscopy, can find and remove these polyps before they become a threat. Early detection is key to prevention.

In this post, we will cover:
✔️ What colon cancer is
✔️ Common risk factors
✔️ How to reduce your risk

If you’re 45 or older, or have a family history of colorectal cancer, talk to your provider about getting screened.

Get to know Family Nurse Practitioner Lisa Lopez! ✨

Lisa Lopez, FNP-BC, joined Texas Digestive Specialists in July 2024 and brings over a decade of clinical experience. She earned both her Bachelor and Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. 🎓

Lisa is a proud member of the American Nurses Association, Texas Nurses Association, and Texas Nurse Practitioner Association—organizations that reflect her deep commitment to the profession and continued growth as a healthcare provider. 👩‍⚕️

Lisa’s greatest inspiration? Her children—Julissa, Jose, and Laylah. ❤️
When Lisa began college, Julissa was just starting Head Start. She carried and gave birth to Jose and Laylah during her undergraduate journey. They’ve watched her overcome challenges, make sacrifices, and persist through every obstacle. “No matter how slow or difficult the journey, I kept moving forward and never gave up.” Their presence motivated her every step of the way. 💪👩‍👧‍👦

Outside the clinic, Lisa enjoys staying active through marathons, biking, yoga, dancing—and going fishing with her husband! 🏃‍♀️🚴‍♀️🧘‍♀️🎣 Family time is her favorite time.

If she hadn’t become a Family Nurse Practitioner, Lisa would have pursued a career as a Medical Doctor. Her passion for medicine and helping others has always been clear—it just would’ve taken a slightly different path. 🩺🌟

Lisa finds true fulfillment in caring for her community and helping patients reach their health goals. As an FNP, she values developing long-term relationships with patients and delivering holistic, evidence-based care. She also enjoys collaborating with a team of dedicated providers to make a real difference. 🤝💙

Is your baby spitting up often? 😕

Here’s what’s normal — and when it might be something more.
Spit-up can be a regular part of infancy, especially during the first 6-12 months. As their digestive systems mature, many babies outgrow reflux naturally. 💧👶

But if your child is experiencing:
✔️ Forceful vomiting
✔️ Poor weight gain
✔️ Excessive fussiness or arching of the back after feeding
✔️ Refusal to eat
✔️ Reflux continuing well beyond age 1

…it might be time to talk to a pediatric gastroenterologist.
We’re here to help answer your questions and support your child’s digestive health every step of the way. 💙

💧 Hydration Tips After Bariatric Surgery 💧

Hydration is key to your recovery and long-term success after bariatric surgery. Since your stomach can’t hold as much, staying hydrated takes a bit more intention—but it’s totally doable!

Here are 4 easy hydration tips to keep you feeling your best:

1️⃣ Sip, Don’t Gulp
Take small sips throughout the day—no chugging! It’s easier on your stomach and helps you stay consistently hydrated.

2️⃣ Time It Right
Avoid drinking 30 minutes before and after meals. This helps your body absorb nutrients more effectively.

3️⃣ Skip the Dehydrators
Limit or avoid drinks that can cause dehydration like alcohol, caffeine, and sugary beverages.

4️⃣ Keep It With You
Carry a refillable water bottle wherever you go—it’s your best hydration buddy!

💙 Stay consistent, listen to your body, and sip smart—your body will thank you!
