In 2024, Americans spent almost $100 billion on out-of-pocket costs for prescriptions. Worse, 27% of prescriptions were not filled because of claims denials and lack of insurance coverage, which could create worse health problems down the road.

One way Frontier Direct Care is addressing this gap is with Frontier Rx. Our members have access to 1,000 generic medications delivered to their door at $0 cost (for most members). For those prescriptions that need to be filled at retail pharmacies, Frontier Rx includes a pre-negotiated cash-pay discount recognized at over 70,000 U.S. pharmacies and counting!

Last month, the ERISA Industry Committee (ERIC) highlighted a provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill legislation that brings direct primary care to the forefront of healthcare conversation. If the bill goes into effect, employers can begin offering HSA-eligible direct primary care benefits to their employees starting in January 2026.

Traditional health insurance plans rely on “risk pooling”—or having a large enough pool of members who don’t use the plan to compensate for those who do—to be successful. This type of system has an inherent tension between employees who may need healthcare and carriers who are motivated to reduce claims. The long-term effects of this tension are delayed care, worse outcomes and higher costs of care down the road.

Frontier Direct Care’s model is the opposite. Our incentive is to make care accessible as early as possible which creates better health outcomes for members and significantly reduces health plan spend for self-insured employers.

How does Frontier Direct Care work with an employer’s stop loss insurance?

In part 8 of our video series, Eric Bricker, MD breaks down how Frontier documents and reports direct contracting services we arrange for plan members. Frontier pre-negotiates an allowed amount and facilitates payments from employer plans for the service. No claims run through the carrier, but Frontier reports the amount back to the stop loss carrier so the amount can be added to the individual and group stop loss amounts!

Many people with employer-sponsored health coverage have felt the weight of rising healthcare costs, but just how much of a burden is the average person carrying?

According to a new report from Peterson-KFF Health System Tracker, households bringing in up to 199% of the federal poverty level pay almost 10% of their income in premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Households making 200-399% of the federal poverty level pay over 6% on average.

To put those numbers in perspective, a family of 4 bringing in $100,000 of income can expect to spend over $6,000 on average each year to cover insurance premiums and out-of-pocket expenses.
