Despite proven benefits for health outcomes and cost savings, only 4% of healthcare spending goes to primary care. The number of primary care providers (P*Ps) has declined steadily from 2012–2021 and as of 2025, there are almost 8,000 areas in the U.S. with P*P shortages.

Without P*Ps, employees don’t have access to preventive care and low-cost disease management which leads to high-cost emergency interventions later. According to Benefits Pro, a new report analyzing health plan transparency files from thousands of hospitals revealed significant price variation for the same procedures depending on geography, who is paying and the facility. There was no correlation between the quality of care and the price difference.
