We get it. It’s easy to get frustrated when your loved one says “what?” for the third time... Or to have to raise our voice so they can hear us.

But... hear us out... 🙏

What if we paused… and responded with compassion instead of criticism?

Hearing loss isn’t just about volume—it’s about clarity, brain fatigue, and emotional wear and tear. And as frustrating as it is for you, pause for a moment, if you will...and plug your ears a bit. Imagine trying to listen to someone speaking to you with fingers in your ears. 👉🙂👈 It would be uncomfortable, difficult, and quite frankly, exhausting.

Here are some ways you can support your spouse or family member with hearing loss:

✅ Get their attention first before speaking—so they can focus
✅ Face them directly when you talk—lip reading helps!
✅ Speak clearly —not louder (shouting can actually make it harder to understand and distort the words you are saying) - it's all about pronunciation and annunciation.
✅ Repeat with patience, or rephrase instead of saying the same thing over
✅ Encourage them to get hearing tested—denial is often fear, not stubbornness
✅ Join them at their hearing appointment—it shows you care ❤️it also gives you perspective and understanding
✅ Be mindful in noisy places—background noise can make hearing nearly impossible

👉 Hearing loss isn’t just frustrating for YOU—it’s isolating for THEM.
Your patience, presence, and support make all the difference.

If you or your loved one is struggling, let’s talk. Call our office today at 717-734-7600. 💙🦻

Hormones play a surprisingly powerful role in hearing health, especially when it comes to hearing loss, ear pressure regulation, and Eustachian tube function. Here are some fascinating facts (because no, ladies, you're not crazy):

🧠🔁 1. Estrogen Protects Hearing:
Estrogen has neuroprotective effects on the auditory system. That’s why women often retain better hearing than men until menopause. After menopause, as estrogen levels drop, hearing loss accelerates in women, especially high-frequency loss.

🎢 2. Hormonal Fluctuations Affect Ear Pressure:
Hormonal changes during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause can cause swelling or fluid retention in the Eustachian tubes, leading to:
- Ear fullness
- Temporary hearing changes
- Increased susceptibility to ear infections

🤰 3. Pregnancy Can Change Your Hearing:
Increased estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy can cause:
- Fluid buildup in the middle ear
- Temporary conductive hearing loss
- More frequent Eustachian tube dysfunction
- Some women also experience heightened sound sensitivity (hyperacusis) during pregnancy!

😬 4. Stress Hormones & Hearing:
High cortisol levels from chronic stress can reduce blood flow to the inner ear, damaging the delicate hair cells. Cortisol imbalance is linked to increased risk of tinnitus and sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL).

🩸 5. Thyroid Hormones Impact Inner Ear Function:
Hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone) can:
- Slow auditory nerve conduction
- Cause sensorineural hearing loss
- Affect balance and spatial orientation
- The inner ear needs T3 and T4 (thyroid hormones) for proper development and function.

👂💦 6. Hormones Influence Eustachian Tube Swelling:
Progesterone and estrogen can increase mucous membrane swelling, making the Eustachian tubes more prone to:
- Blockage
- Pressure buildup
- Difficulty equalizing during altitude changes (making going up and down mountains or airplane rides very difficult for some)

If you think your hormones may be impacting your hearing, call us to schedule a hearing test and reach out to your primary care physician to ask about getting some bloodwork done. You are your best advocate in your healthcare!

Did You Know 🤔 - some HEARING FOOD FOR THOUGHT on this Thursday evening...

Hearing plays a surprisingly powerful role in sensory eating (pleasurable, enjoyable eating), and when it's fully engaged, it can elevate the entire eating experience in subtle but significant ways.

Here’s how 👇🏼👇🏼(be sure to read the bit of article attached, too, for some helpful tips and tricks - a brilliant read!)

🔊 1. Sound Enhances Flavor Perception

The crunch of a chip. The crisp snap of fresh vegetables or a perfectly seared crust triggers satisfaction. Research shows we actually perceive food as fresher or tastier when it sounds “right.”

If you can’t hear these textures clearly (due to hearing loss), you might miss the sensory reward—making eating less enjoyable or fulfilling.

👂 2. Hearing Increases Mindful Eating

Sound draws attention to each bite. When you can hear your chewing, the sizzle, the slurp, or even the background clink of silverware, you're more present with your food.

This presence fosters mindful eating—a slower, more intentional pace that improves digestion, satisfaction, and overall experience.

👥 3. Social Eating = Better Digestion + Joy

Conversation during meals stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system—the “rest and digest” mode.

If hearing loss makes conversation exhausting, people often withdraw from social meals, which can lead to eating faster, less or feeling disconnected.

🎶 4. Ambient Sound Sets the Mood

The music at a dinner party, the hum of a bustling café, or the quiet calm of a candlelit meal—all influence how food tastes and feels - its been scientifically proven in a study called "gastrophysics" - spearheaded by Professor Charles Spence at Oxford University.

Good hearing enhances how we interpret these environments, impacting how comforting, exciting, or luxurious a meal feels.

🧠 5. The Brain Needs Harmony

Eating is a multi-sensory experience—taste, touch, sight, smell, and sound all work together.

When one sense like hearing is diminished, the brain receives less stimulation, which may dull the overall pleasure of eating.

So basically, when we hear clearly, we savor more deeply. Hearing supports texture perception, presence, emotional connection, and even brain engagement during meals. Improving hearing—whether through hearing aids or cognitive awareness—can literally make food taste better, conversation flow easier, and memories form stronger.

When’s the last time you had your hearing checked? 🤔
Maybe gradeschool? 🅰️📚
If you can’t remember… it’s probably time. ⏲️
And do it before you get OLDer (we said older, ok), y'all. ⏳
Please. 🙏

Welp folks, this is it... 😯🫠😬

She's OOO (Out of the Office) for the next week and half (Bethany, that is) on a well-deserved vacation! 🚗💨

So while we LOVE when she's able to take a break, we love it even more when you are patient with us as we navigate this ship without her while handling multiple locations and mobile appts. 🚢

Your patience, support, and kindness is much appreciated! 💙🦻🫶

It's July 1st and you know what that means ...❤️🤍💙🎆🧨

Fireworks season is upon us! And loud noise exposure is a leading contributor to hearing loss and acoustic trauma. 💥👂‼️

A few weeks ago, we took earmolds for 19 and 20-year-old best friend professional welders and ordered them custom hearing protection— because prevention is 🔑 and we LOVE to see it! 👏 It’s never too early to protect your hearing, especially in loud work AND play environments. Your future self will thank you. 🔧👂

Custom ear plugs = comfort, protection, and long-term hearing health. 🫶👂🫶

Don't wait until the damage is done—start early, start now. 💪

If you or someone you know works in a noisy environment, loves to attend the races, shoot for sport, or set off fireworks, etc... please do your due-diligence and take care of your hearing, or encourage your friends and coworkers to get custom ear protection. $150 now could literally save you (and them) thousands of dollars later. 🤷‍♀️
