People experiencing homelessness are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of extreme weather. According to a recent study out of Boston University, heat-related mortality rates amongst unhoused populations are substantially higher than in the general population.
Communities can take public health measures to reduce the impact of heat on unhoused individuals, including:
🏫 Opening cooling stations that provide relief from high temperatures, in places like senior centers, libraries, and churches throughout the area. During the recent heatwave, cooling stations in Dauphin County were announced on local news websites. You can also call PA 211 for updates on locations and hours.
💧 Making drinking water accessible. If you live on a bustling street, consider leaving a cooler of water bottles outdoors during heat advisories. You can also donate water bottles to local shelters or food banks, or advocate for more public drinking water stations in your town or city.
🌳 Incorporating greenspace and shade in urban design. Trees, parks, and shaded areas lower temperatures and provide life-saving shelter during extreme heat. Advocating for green infrastructure supports everyone’s health!
Ultimately, access to affordable housing is one of the most important ways to protect those at risk. Let’s work to keep each other safe in the heat!
