Hand, foot, and mouth disease doesn’t just affect young children. In this Midstate Medical Moment, Jasmine Virk, MD, pediatrician, UPMC Children's Community Pediatrics, provides tips to recognize hand, foot, and mouth disease and reminds families that practicing good hand hygiene is a great way to prevent the spread.
To manage at home, Dr. Virk recommends keeping kids hydrated and feeding them soft and cool foods. She also suggests controlling aches and fever with drugs like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
According to Dr. Virk, kids are free to return to school and daycare settings when they are feeling better with an increased appetite, controlled fever, and blisters that are no longer oozing.
Unsure about recognizing or managing hand, foot, and mouth disease? Consult with your child’s pediatrician — if you don’t have one or need same-day care, consider visiting UPMC Children's Express Care in Mechanicsburg or Hummelstown. https://www.chp.edu/locations/express-care
