Another great reason to teach our kids to write the way we dinosaurs learned to write instead of relying on Chat GPT. Using AI to write leads to less healthy brain connectivity and makes us more average!!

A recent M.I.T. study found that subjects who used ChatGPT to write essays demonstrated much less brain activity than a group that used their own brains to write and a group that was given access to Google Search to look up relevant information. The analysis of the L.L.M. users showed fewer widespread connections between different parts of their brains; less alpha connectivity, which is associated with creativity; and less theta connectivity, which is associated with working memory. Another striking finding was that the texts produced by the L.L.M. users tended to converge on common words and ideas; the use of A.I. had a homogenizing effect. “The output was very, very similar for all of these different people, coming in on different days, talking about high-level personal, societal topics, and it was skewed in some specific directions,” Nataliya Kosmyna, a research scientist at M.I.T. Media Lab, said. A.I. is a technology of averages: large language models are trained to spot patterns across vast tracts of data; the answers they produce tend toward consensus. Other, older technologies have aided and perhaps enfeebled writers, of course. But with A.I. we’re so thoroughly able to outsource our thinking that it makes us more average, too. Reading an article about people who were my first supervisors and teachers in psychiatry makes me miss those days in Boston! Loved seeing Dr. Waldinger’s happiness research profiled in the NYT!

Decades of wellness studies have identified a formula for happiness, but you won’t figure it out alone.

Apparently this 1 billion dollars in school mental health funding was not “advancing (current) administration priorities.” The goal of this funding that did have bipartisan support was to double the number of school based mental health professionals across the country. Schools are uniquely positioned to meet the needs of so many kids who would be otherwise missed. the repercussions of this will be grave and far reaching. This should be a priority for EVERY administration and EVERY American!!

The Trump administration will not renew grants worth $1 billion that were aimed at boosting mental health services in schools, a Department of Education official said.

The majority of children with psychiatric disorders already do NOT receive treatment.

Yesterday's executive order (Make America Healthy Again) charges the unqualified HHS secretary with various tasks including to assess the "THREAT posed by the prescription of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, stimulants." We know from years of research that when prescribed by well trained child psychiatrists, these medications are safe and effective. And they SAVE LIVES!

Here is a novel idea--it might be useful to consult actual trained child psychiatrists and pediatricians to find out what initiatives might actually make our children healthier rather than spreading more misinformation that makes parents skeptical about the safety of established treatment for their children.

The 2024 World Happiness Report indicated that the US fell out of the top 20 happiest countries for the first time since the report was published 20 years ago! It is a direct result of the significant drop in happiness in those under 30! We must do better and provide more hope for the future for our young people!

Economists and social scientists say the tendency to blame social media for Gen Z's unhappiness ignores some of the chronic pressures young people face.
