Dr. Lescale offers the latest in Doppler Ultrasound technology. Doppler ultrasound uses sound waves to measure the flow of blood through blood vessels. Waveforms of the blood flow are shown on the ultrasound screen. In a pregnancy, doppler flow studies are used to assess blood flow in the maternal uterus, the umbilical vein and arteries, the fetal brain, and the fetal heart.

One reason to use a Doppler flow study is when a fetus has or is at-risk for intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), which means fetus is small for their gestational age. A fetus with IUGR may not be receiving enough nutrients from the placenta. Dopplers are also a common tool to check the health and the blood flow between twins.

A Doppler study can determine if the blood flow in different organs has decreased. If the flow is abnormal is some way, management of a pregnancy can change dramatically. For example, some abnormal Dopplers will help doctors figure out when the best time is for delivery.

Pregnant during the holidays? Here are a few tips:

🦃Find healthy swaps for traditional high-sugar holiday foods.
Make sure you are getting in plenty of fiber and nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables so that you are feeling your best.

🦃Remember to avoid fermented cheese, sushi, and raw fish.
Bring a mocktail to enjoy during holiday parties so you can join in the holiday toast. Seltzer water with garnishes such as apples and cranberries is a good option. Sparkling grape juice and non-alcoholic, pasteurized eggnog are fine in moderation, as well.

🦃Traveling is generally safe while pregnant, especially if your pregnancy isn’t high-risk. You should be cleared to travel until around 36 weeks of pregnancy. Make sure to pack prenatal records and your doctor’s information.
