Mental Health Awareness Month: Understanding Teen Anxiety

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to highlight issues affecting young people, including anxiety, which impacts nearly 1 in 3 U.S. teens (31.9%), according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

Anxiety goes beyond everyday stress. It can linger, feel overwhelming, and doesn’t always have a clear cause.

Common Signs of Anxiety in Teens
• Constant worrying
• Feeling restless or on edge
• Racing thoughts
• Trouble sleeping
• Irritability
• Physical symptoms like headaches or stomachaches

Anxiety can interfere with school, friendships, and daily life. If these symptoms last more than a couple of weeks, it’s time to talk to someone.

How to Get Help
Start by reaching out to a trusted adult—a parent, teacher, or counselor. Mental health professionals can offer tools like therapy, mindfulness, or medication if needed.

Support is available, and healing is possible.

Mental Health Awareness Month: Let’s Talk About Teen Depression

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to talk about the challenges teens are facing, especially when it comes to depression.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 3.2 million teens in the U.S. experienced a major depressive episode in the past year. That’s around 13% of adolescents.
What Does Depression Look Like in Teens?

It’s not just about feeling sad. Signs might include:
• Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
• Constant tiredness or low energy
• Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
• Changes in appetite
• Difficulty focusing
• Feeling irritable, withdrawn, or hopeless

If these symptoms last two weeks or more, it’s time to reach out.

If you’re struggling—or think a friend might be—talk to someone you trust: a friend, teacher, school counselor, or parent.

Therapists and counselors can help, and there are safe, confidential places to get support.

• The Trevor Project (for LGBTQ+ youth): 1-866-488-7386

This Mental Health Awareness Month, remember:
You matter. Help is real. Things can get better.
