Introduction to the My Onion Method for Beginners🧅

Welcome to the "My Onion Method: A Holistic Approach to Mental Health Recovery and Wellness." This method is designed to help you navigate the complex layers of recovery, providing tools and insights to enhance your mental health and overall well-being. Much like an onion, our lives are composed of various layers, each
representing different aspects of our mental, emotional, and physical health.
Layer 1: Seek Help
The journey begins with the critical step of seeking help. Acknowledging that you
need support is a courageous and essential part of recovery. This layer encourages
you to reach out to professionals, friends, and family for guidance and assistance.
Layer 2: Emotional Wellness
Next, we delve into emotional wellness. This layer emphasizes the importance of
understanding and processing your emotions, helping you develop healthy coping strategies that promote resilience and self-awareness.
Layer 3: Balance (Time and Finances)
Layer three focuses on achieving balance in your life, particularly regarding time
management and financial stability. Finding equilibrium in these areas can
significantly reduce stress and enhance your overall well-being.
Layer 4: Support
Support is a cornerstone of recovery. This layer highlights the value of building a
robust support network, whether through friends, family, or community resources,
reminding you that you are not alone on this journey.
Layer 5: Boundaries
Setting healthy boundaries is essential for maintaining mental health. This layer
guides you in establishing limits that protect your emotional well-being and foster
positive relationships.
Layer 6: Nutrition
Onions are known for their nutritional density and health benefits. This layer dives
into the importance of nutrition in recovery, exploring how the foods we consume
can impact our mental and physical health.
Layer 8: Physical Wellness
Physical wellness is critical to recovery. Layer eight encourages you to check in with
your physical health, promoting the importance of regular health assessments and understanding your body's needs.
Layer 9: Fun Activities
Life should also include joy and laughter. This layer emphasizes the importance of
integrating fun activities into your routine, reminding you to nurture your spirit
through enjoyable experiences.
Layer 10: The Core: God, Spirituality
At the core of this method lies spirituality and a connection to something greater
than ourselves. This layer explores how spiritual beliefs can provide strength and
purpose throughout your recovery journey.
The onion analogy resonates with me for several reasons:
1. Nutritional Density: Onions are superfoods that can help fight disease, paralleling the essential role of nutrition in recovery. Layer six will provide more insights into this crucial aspect.
2. Emotional Release: Chopping and peeling onions can evoke tears, symbolizing the
emotional challenges we face in recovery. Acknowledging these difficulties is vital,
but it’s also important to embrace the changes that come with growth and healing.
3. Humor: Humor can be a powerful tool in life. The iconic conversation between
Shrek and Donkey about onions having layers reminds us that our experiences are
multifaceted, and laughter can lighten the load.
4. Garden Analogy: Growing an onion in a garden takes time and patience, just as
recovery does. My own battles with recovery have taught me that it requires
tending, nurturing, and learning new skills. Like a garden, we must protect ourselves
from life’s storms and negative influences, ensuring that we cultivate an
environment conducive to growth.
Through the "My Onion Method," I hope to provide you with the tools and support
necessary to peel back the layers of your own experiences, leading you toward a
healthier, more fulfilling life. Welcome to your journey of discovery and healing!

Read that again.

Forgiveness is for you, not the other person.

Because every grudge you continue to hold on to is costing you energy, time, and joy. Once you learn to give yourself the gift of forgiveness, you will set yourself free.

There is compelling evidence to recommend eating nuts at least three times a week to maximize your chances of living longer and healthier lives. Raw nuts are preferred over salted or toasted ones, and whole or chopped nuts over nut butters. https://bit.ly/3EgQ7sF

Book overview
My Onion Method, A Recovery Model is a series of workbooks and a model to aid someone in recovery from mental health disorders, trauma, substance use disorders, etc. This curriculum does not hold the cure, but it is merely a compilation of tools to aid someone working on their own recovery or coaching someone in recovery. This was created by Jo Smoak.

This book contains the information on Layer 1: Seek Help to My Onion Method. This book contains information on a wellness toolbox as well as have other work sheets to aid in your recovery and choosing to seek help. This method contains tools that I personally have used or continue to use in my own wellness journey. The journey of recovery is hard and feels impossible sometimes. At times, we may feel or get stuck. This book provides some problem solving tools, as well as, worksheets on skills to help aid in creating a balance in one’s recovery.

Remember: There’s always hope, even when it feels hopeless.
