Legacy Connections & Counseling, LLC

Legacy Connections & Counseling, LLC Legacy Connections & Counseling is a trauma-focused practice using IFS parts work & equine therapy. Cherry Legacy. Slate has been my equine partner for 10 years!

Legacy Connections & Counseling, LLC, is owned and operated by me, Austin Mikolin, LPC, and my horse, Slate. The name of the business is to honor Slate's name from his racetrack days - S. Legacy Connections & Counseling operates under the umbrella of Aurora Counseling & Well-Being (https://www.aurora-counseling.com/). I am a licensed counselor with specialized training for trauma counseling with use of principles from IFS/parts-work and from Natural Lifemanship. I enjoy taking the journey alongside my clients as they build awareness of their inner world and how that impacts the relationships around them, so that they can connect back to the parts of self from which they may have disconnected. My approach to counseling is trauma-focused and relationship- centered. I believe in using a somatic experiential approach with use of movement, rhythm, bottom-up regulation tactics, and exploration of inner parts of one's identity/sense of self. I often encourage creative expression of emotions that does not always include verbal expression! Legacy Connections & Counseling was formed with the desire to offer a supplemental modality to traditional talk therapy. I've found that when processing relationship patterns and parts of self that show up in relationships, it is helpful to have real-time experience through working with horses. As prey animals, horses react to what they sense and feel in that moment, which gives us immediate feedback on what we is happening in our bodies or what part of us is present.

“When you suggested doing horse therapy I thought you were crazy but I was willing to try...and now my relationships with everyone are so much better, I can bond better, I can be more open with talking to people without just thinking everyone dislikes me, and I'm beginning to think that maybe Austin is on to something..."

The powerful but safe presence of a horse, paired with a somatic parts work approach, creates the deep relational healing for moments like this. ❤️

I love the work I do.

Slate isn’t the only one working hard towards trauma healing with our clients! Austin Mikolin, LPC, recently completed a 60-hour certification course and is now an Integrated Somatic Trauma Therapy (ISTT) Practitioner!
ISTT combines neuroscience with sensory/bodily awareness practices to deepen the process of healing from trauma and to open the internal relationship of self.

When you hold space for others’ insecurities, show up with willing connection despite that, and work towards building a healthy relationship through all the parts of us that hold fears around safe, connected relationships…sometimes you need to recharge and give yourself a break too!

What does love mean to you?
To me, it’s a safe place for our fears, worries, concerns, and insecurities to land. It’s the space that holds these things and says “it’s going to be okay, we can honor that these exist, no matter how scary, and we can work on them not needing to exist”.

Today during a session, something magical happened.
Slate laid down, and almost fully fell asleep.
To the average person, or even the average horse person, this isn’t remarkable. To those who know Slate, it is.
Slate doesn’t lay down, and he doesn’t lock his knees to sleep standing up. Many people in the barn have witnessed how he will almost fall over or will rely on the stall walls to keep him up when he’s tired. Recently, an osteopath expressed to me that I may never know what trauma he’s been through that has resulted in this or what he may need in his environment now to feel safe enough to really sleep.
Well today, while working with a client who has significant trauma and doubts that she can create safe space for herself and her wounded, traumatized parts, Slate closed his eyes, wobbled with sleep, and laid down.
Slate showed her how she really can create a safe space with nothing else but her own energy and how she showed up in the relationship. This lead to a heartfelt discussion of how she can also offer this same thing to herself and her wounds.
This. This is why I love equine therapy.
