LOVE - Sustainable Health from the Inside Out

I have a question for you: What's one thing you can do today to love yourself well?

As we enter into a new year and consider what sustainable health from the inside out would look like for us - day in and day out - I want to to suggest that it begins with love. Jesus tells us that the greatest commandment is to love God and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40).

I have become convinced again that in order to love others well, I must also love myself. If I am honest, this has been hard for me lately. I can be so critical of myself, and when I get stuck in this place it always leads me to be critical of others. I was convicted of this recently and am so grateful for the gift of repentance - the opportunity to realign my thinking with the thoughts of Christ. When I did this, I was able to connect with the love of God again and could sense His heart for me saying: "I love you just the way you are - all the time - no matter what." I have been letting this soak in these last few days, and as I have, I am noticing that His love is overflowing out of me and helping me to treat myself kindly and love others in transformational ways. I am grateful.

So join me this first week of 2022, and do one thing every day to intentionally love yourself the way that God loves you. Please leave your ideas below so we can learn from one another. I'll go first. Loving myself well today looks like acknowledging and writing down the 3 things I did to create forward momentum in my life. How about you?

PEACE

For me, sustainable health (ongoing and continuous well-being) begins on the inside. Everyday.

Every morning I have a choice to make. I start my day kneeling beside my bed before my Heavenly Father as an outward physical manifestation of an inward posture to trust Him. This is a choice and especially important when I wake up with anxiety. Lately some new trials have come my way and given me plenty of reasons to worry. And so, I make a choice to exchange my anxiety for the peace of God. I do this by talking to God out loud and pouring my heart out to Him. I do this by repeating the Scriptures that I have memorized and hidden in my heart. I do this by singing worship songs and lifting my hands in praise - even if I don't feel like it. Eventually, my focus shifts from my problems to His Presence. In His Presence the anxiety fades and I experience His peace that passes all understanding. It's a miracle. Everyday. This is part of the process of sustainable health for me - from the inside out.

I bless you to take a deep breath and as you exhale imagine all of your anxiety leaving your body. As you inhale receive the peace of God that brings life, health and hope. Do this a few times until you feel your body relaxing. Remember that God knows what you need and He loves to provide for His children. God loves you all the time and no matter what. I bless you with the peace of God this Christmas.

"So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you."
Matthew 6:31-33 (CSB).

SUSTAINABLE HEALTH FROM THE INSIDE OUT

This is an ongoing journey for me. How about you?

I have found that understanding what authentic hope looks like in my life makes sustainable health possible. Last night I gathered with a few precious friends and together we read Psalm 146 and Romans 5:1-5 and answered the question: "What does authentic hope look like in my life?" Here's what we came up with...

Authentic Hope is choosing to praise God, taking the next step, focusing on how loving Christ is, remembering that our circumstances don't define us, planning for the good and the fun, waiting on the Lord, focusing on His Presence, receiving and resting in God's LOVE, soaking worship, remembering what God has already done and what we have already come through, magnifying the good and the goodness of God rather than the problem, connecting with life-giving community, using our gifts, praising God until our soul believes, remembering the power of our choices, choosing "Hallelujah" even when we don't feel it, rejoicing always, giving thanks in everything (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Psalm 103. "This hope will not disappoint us because God's love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us" (Romans 5:5).

I invite you to ponder what authentic hope looks like for you and to step into it today. I believe that as you do you will experience the love of God which will empower you to make life-giving decisions for your body, soul, and spirit.
