I created a portable First/Then visual pouch using a simple zipper pouch 🔑. Inside are picture cards that can be easily swapped out depending on the activity or setting. The best part? It can clip right onto a student’s wheelchair, backpack, or desk for on-the-go access.

💡 Why I love it:
• Predictability: Helps students know what’s coming next.
• Independence: Students can check visuals themselves.
• Portability: No bulky binders—just grab, zip, and go!
• Flexibility: Works for transitions, classroom routines, therapy sessions, or community outings.

Visual supports don’t just reduce frustration—they empower students to communicate, understand, and succeed. 🌟

Check out this creative homemade zoo map 🖍️—drawn with scented markers for extra olfactory input! Each animal has its own spot, and the scents made the activity even more engaging for speech and language practice.

Here’s how you can try it at home:
✨ Draw or gather animals (pictures, toys, or your child’s artwork).
✨ Use scented markers to add a smell to each animal’s area (grape for the giraffe, orange for the tiger, blueberry for the bird).
✨ Take your child on a zoo tour—smell, name, describe, and talk about each animal.

🎯 Speech + Language Goals You Can Target:
• Animal sounds + early words (roar, moo, baa, tweet).
• Vocabulary building (zebra, elephant, monkey, lion).
• Describing words (big, stripey, soft, smelly).
• Following directions (“Find the animal that smells like orange”).
• Sentence expansion (“I smell the monkey. He is brown.”).

👃 Using scents taps into multiple senses, making learning stick while keeping kids motivated and excited! 🌟

Would your child love to make their own scented zoo like this one? 🦓🐒 Drop your favorite zoo animal in the comments!

Playdoh + sorting + early stages of cutting

We made foods for a party by cutting strips of playdoh!

For example— the red was red apple, the green was beans, and the yellow was lemon.

These scissors are my favorite for teaching how to cute because #1 they won’t cut hair and #2 they have a buffer in the middle!

Sticker books are a SIMPLE way to target body parts, sustained attention, and spatial terms.

Grab one at Walmart and enjoy the holiday fun with your little one… all while boosting their language!

I love displaying their work on the refrigerator as a little incentive to do their best & to have it as a talking point in the evenings while we are doing supper!

One of my FAVORITE strategies for regulation!

I explicitly teach what a break card is. When you get that antsy feeling like you’re about to do something silly or feel a burst of energy coming, ask for a break! Here’s the catch— you only get ___ number of break cards.

For this kiddo, they had two 5 minute break cards for a 60 minute session. When they asked for a break, the timer was set. When the timer went off, expectations were explicitly set that they had to return to work.

They could use them anytime they wanted!!

But here’s the kicker— if they used them in the first 20 minutes, they would have 40 straight minutes of work!

This teaches internal regulation, decision making, self regulation behaviors, and intrinsic motivation.

Try this during homework!! Breaks are a GOOD thing… especially when your kiddo knows to ask for one and can return to work seamlessly when their break time is over. You have then achieves QUALITY work. Practice makes perfect!
