Food can be fuel, but food is not JUST fuel.
Food is pleasure, comfort, nostalgia, routine, connection, culture, tradition, socialization, play, sensory, satisfaction, privilege, nourishing, adventure, fun, energy, delicious, disgusting, hot, cold, dry, moist, creamy, crunchy, crispy, salty, sweet, savory, smelly, stressful, overwhelming, boring….
To me, my Granny's molasses cookies are all the best parts of what food can be—pleasure, comfort, nostalgia, tradition, fun, sweet, and satisfying all wrapped up into a few bites of deliciousness. The recipe doesn’t need any tweaking, any ingredient substitutions, any “healthification”.... They are perfect and delicious every time, but that might also be because these are more than just cookies. My mom made these for her brother when he was sick, she brought them to my son when he was in the hospital, and she always has a batch ready when we all come home for Christmas. Yes, these are definitely more than cookies—they are love in its purest, sweetest form, handed down through four generations. And really, what could be better than that?!?!❤️❤️❤️
