James Madison University’s Occupational Therapy Clinical Education Services (JMU-OTCES) is a dynamic clinical program offering pediatric therapy services to children and their families. We serve children from birth through adolescence, helping them to achieve success in all areas of their life. Services include traditional one-on-one occupational therapy and speech therapy evaluations, interventio
ns, and consultative services. Additional group programs and camps will be offered to address specific needs that cannot be adequately met by other community programs. The clinic operates with the support of JMU’s graduate occupational therapy program, with both students and faculty members collaborating on clinic events and services. In addition to providing services for the children who are referred for occupational therapy, the clinic also strives to support and educate both caregivers and community members. JMU-OTCES operates within JMU’s Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services (IIHHS), which provides opportunities for student learning, faculty practice, and research while meeting community needs.

What a week to wrap up summer camps! Thank you to everyone who participated and all our lovely clients who attended!
Week two of summer camp was called "Friends Around the World!" It was themed around different cultures and involved activities that were both therapeutic and taught our kids about different places!
We are thrilled to be able to offer summer camp this year! We are just starting our second week, and wanted to share some of the fun activities we had in week one.
Week one was "Pop Culture" week, where we got to be superheroes and more!

The staff at OTCES and the JMU OT students assembled 250 school staff appreciation self-care kits for personnel in our community!
These kits are to say THANK YOU to the awesome staff and educators who assisted in our SLAM! (Student Learning and Motivation) Program and contain items related to various occupations, such as gardening, cooking, self-care, and recreation.
Self-care and leisure are vital occupations that, especially during this past year, are often overlooked or pushed to the side. When we are busy or stressed, it is easy to neglect the simple acts that can improve our mental health and overall wellbeing. As OTs, we wanted to make sure that these super individuals take a little time out to participate in meaningful and desired occupations!
Join us in welcoming our newest team member!
ASHLEY RIHA, MSOT, OTR/L, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST
Ashley Riha is an alumna of James Madison University, having completed her B.A. in Psychology and earned her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from Shenandoah University. While at JMU, Ashley volunteered at OTCES and fell in love with the setting and the community we serve, and always hoped to return.
Ashley has participated in numerous inclusive programs and summer camps throughout the Shenandoah Valley, including hippotherapy, aquatics, sensory camps, handwriting clinics, and JMU’s Overcoming Barriers programs for children in the community. Ashley has completed fieldwork rotations at a sensory development center and an adult inpatient rehabilitation facility and her passions lie in pediatrics, yoga, emotional regulation, sensory integration, and neurological conditions.
Ashley lives in the Shenandoah Valley with her 8-year-old daughter and together they love exploring nature and all things Pokemon.
JMU-OTCES has been up to something super fun these past few weeks! JMU Masters of Occupational Therapy students have been leading a program called SLAM!- Student Learning And Motivation- an individualized weekly program designed to explore and build upon unique interests, hobbies, and talents while also working on skills that will help clients be successful in their role as a "student". Check out some of our highlights here and on our instagram @ jmuotces for more updated content :)
Come out and support Shenandoah Valley Autism Partnership tonight! You can also donate if you can’t make it out tonight! Venmo !!
With Valentine’s Day soon approaching, our staff has taken a more festive route with their crafts. We’ve all heard of a social butterfly, but have you ever heard of a LOVE BUTTERFLY?
•
The “Love Butterfly” craft focuses on utilizing fine motor skills by asking the kids to color and/or cut paper. It’s also fun and makes a great decoration for the Holiday :)

Fall School - tOol Time
Fill your box with tools special for school!
JMU-OTCES is hosting a 8-week, VIRTUAL group program starting this September! This program is specially designed to support children and youth by introducing “tools” that will help them build resilience and confidence as they balance their responsibilities as a student.
Activities will be oriented around developing skills in the areas of flexible thinking, emotion regulation, adapting to changing routines and environments, and identifying positive self attributes.
Our goal is that the skills developed in this program can be organically integrated into and complement each family’s home and school routines using the tool box as a resource.
Here is what happens during the Fall - School TOol Time program!
Each virtual meeting will follow a similar structure including: welcome/greeting, reviewing the activity schedule, completing the selected main activities, and participating in a reflection about the activities and how the “tools” in the toolbox can be used in daily life. Throughout this 9-week program, additional supports, activities, and resources will be made available to participants including (1) an optional orientation offered the week prior to the start of the program, (2) specific activities that can be incorporated into the child’s family routines to reinforce concepts introduced during live meetings, (3) open “workshops” led by program leaders at designated afternoon times once a week, and (4) a specialized tool “kit” with supplies that can be used when completing program activities.
Additionally, the program leader will provide information to the caregivers regarding materials that might be helpful to have on hand for the upcoming virtual meetings, an overview of each meeting, and an explanation and instructions for the activity(ies) to work on between meetings.
If you are interested in registering for this program please visit our website https://otces.cisat.jmu.edu/group.html or email us at [email protected] with any questions about this program.
Kits will be “UNDER CONSTRUCTION” beginning August 3rd. Kits will NOT BE AVAILABLE beginning the week of August 3rd until further notice. We are working on some new programming and activity ideas for Kits.
More Information will be coming soon!
