Serving the Community Since 2011
In 2008, a group of nurses met in Harrisonburg, Virginia to prevent the spread of influenza in the community. Through that project, they found that there was no medical care available to the homeless population. Not long after recognizing this need, a coalition of volunteers formed.
The coalition’s vision included short-term, immediate goals such as addressing basic healthcare needs, as well as long-term goals of helping the people experiencing homelessness become well enough to secure jobs and, eventually, housing.
In July 2011, the Suitcase Clinic served its first patients in the shelters of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and they have continued serving ever since. The Healthcare for the Homeless Suitcase Clinic Initiative is an innovative approach to addressing this population’s unique healthcare needs by providing on-site care at the shelters.
Many volunteers have worked to make this initiative a success, and all funding for the Suitcase Clinic is provided through grants and donations.
