Sunnyside Communities

Sunnyside Communities The Sunnyside campus is situated in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Residents here take in many galleries, shops, eateries and museums, often just a short stroll away.

Sunnyside Communities is a nonprofit senior living organization with three Virginia campuses, offering vibrant lifestyles, exceptional care, and a welcoming home for adults 55 and better for more than 110 years. Homes here have the breathtaking backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains and a direct view of Massanutten Peak. Sparkling ponds, gently rolling hills and beautiful gardens make Sunnyside a "little slice of heaven" for those who reside there. Summit Square in Waynesboro, Virginia is located right in the heart of this charming town, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Summit Square is best defined as "small town living, big city charm". King's Grant is a magnificent campus on over 120 acres of colorful gardens, blending gracefully into the natural beauty of the surrounding fields, lakes and streams. Located in historic Martinsville, Virginia, cottages and apartment homes are tastefully placed to enjoy panoramic views. King's Grant is a community "surrounded by beauty, defined by charm".

Extra extra read all about it. The Evergreen magazine dropped just before Christmas this year and should be landing in mailboxes as we speak.

This true labor of love is filled with stories, snapshots, and moments from all three of our communities. It is one of our favorite projects of the year and a reminder of just how much heart lives within these pages.

We hope you love it as much as we loved creating it.

The Sunnyside Communities corporate office delivered 116 pounds of donated food to the local Blue Ridge Area Food Bank today. This labor of love was a joy to be part of during the holiday season.

It’s National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day and all three Sunnyside Communities are fully leaning in.

From Sunnyside in Harrisonburg to Summit Square in Waynesboro and King’s Grant in Martinsville, we know there are some truly questionable sweaters hiding in closets across the Valley. The louder the pattern. The brighter the lights. The more “why would anyone wear that” the better.

We want to see them.

Drop a photo of your most deplorable ugly Christmas sweater in the comments and help us crown an unofficial champion. Extra points for tinsel, blinking lights, and sweaters that should probably never be worn outside the month of December. 🎄🧶

A good listen alert 👀

Ever wonder how someone finds their way into senior living leadership or what really happens behind the scenes of a Life Plan Community?

Our President and CEO Josh Lyons was just featured on the LeadingAge Virginia Voices in Leadership podcast and it is full of great stories. From growing up around Sunnyside thanks to his dad’s legacy to building a culture rooted in collaboration care and community today this conversation gives a rare and very human look at leadership in action.

There is talk of mentoring future leaders. Why collaboration matters more than competition. A few glimpses into life outside the office. And an optimistic take on where senior living is headed next.

If you have ever been curious about the heart behind Sunnyside Communities this one is worth a listen.

The Sunnyside Communities corporate office celebrated our annual holiday party today with a white elephant Christmas extravaganza gift exchange.

There was laughter. There was competitive gift stealing. There were wildly unnecessary items being fiercely defended. At least one person said, “I didn’t know I needed this, but now I do” (you know what we are talking about, Ken 😉).🎄✨

Assisted Living at Sunnyside is so merry right now we are about two twinkles away from breaking into a full chorus of “O Christmas Tree.”

Pure holiday joy over here.

All three of our Sunnyside Communities woke this morning to a quiet quilt of snow. At King's Grant, Sunnyside, and Summit Square, the first light revealed more than frosted rooftops. It highlighted why life in a Life Plan Community feels a bit like stepping into a chapter of a gentler story.

While the roads turned slick and the wind pressed against the windows, residents did not face the day with worry. Walkways were cleared before sunrise. Breakfast was warm and waiting. Neighbors were checked on not out of duty but out of affection. The burdens of winter were quietly lifted before most even rose from bed.

There is something almost enchanted about a snow day here. To watch the flakes fall, knowing that you are safe. To sit in a favorite chair with cocoa while friends gather nearby. To realize that the weight you used to carry alone is now shared by a whole community.

Life in a Life Plan Community offers more than security. It offers fellowship. It offers peace. It offers the gentle promise that even on the coldest days, you are not forgotten and you are not alone.

Here is to a beautiful snow day. May the quiet care of this day warm every heart.

Today we pause to recognize the quiet, steady generosity that makes this place feel like home. Every act of kindness shapes the lives of our residents and lifts up the staff who serve them with such care. Our Fellowship Fund and our Employee Emergency Relief Fund exist because people who believe in this community choose to give so others can stand a little taller.

If you feel moved to support these efforts, we welcome it with grateful hearts. If you simply share a kind word or a moment of encouragement, that is a gift too.

Thank you for helping Sunnyside, Summit Square, and King's Grant remain places filled with compassion, dignity, and hope.

This video was unscripted. No notes. No coaching. Yet if you listen, a single word rises like a tide. Family. It comes again and again, quiet and true, spoken by people who did not plan to say it but felt it all the same.

Our three communities are more than places to work. They are places where people stand together, look out for one another, and carry the simple gratitude of belonging. We have much to give thanks for. Our hearts are full. Our cups run over.

From our table to yours, Happy Thanksgiving.

Last week brought a little extra joy to all of us at Sunnyside Communities. Every one of our three campuses along with our corporate office received turkeys to take home for the holiday. It was a thoughtful gift and a welcome reminder of how much we appreciate the people who make our communities feel like home.

Moments like this reflect the heart of Sunnyside. We care for one another. We show up for one another. And we celebrate the season with gratitude for the hands and hearts that serve our residents every day.

Sunnyside Communities is delighted to share that Lynda McMillen, our former director of development, has been named this year’s recipient of the Sandra S Neff Fundraising Executive Award. Presented by the Shenandoah Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, this honor recognizes a fundraising professional who exemplifies integrity, leadership, and a commitment to ethical and compassionate philanthropy.

Lynda’s eighteen year career at Sunnyside Communities shaped the way we understand generosity and community care. She began as a development officer, grew into the role of assistant director, and eventually became director of development. In each position, she put people at the center of her work. Her efforts helped ensure that residents who outlived their financial resources could remain in the place they loved and continued to call home. That mission grounded everything she did.
