On Thursday and Friday, Development at Sunnyside Communities hosted two Cobbler & Conversation events—one at Summit Square in Waynesboro and one at Sunnyside in Harrisonburg. The cobbler was delicious, but the conversation was even sweeter, thanks to Everence Financial, who led a thoughtful discussion on financial well-being.

August is National Make a Will Month.

At Sunnyside Communities, we believe every chapter of life deserves to be written with intention. Whether you call Sunnyside in Harrisonburg, King's Grant in Martinsville, or Summit Square in Waynesboro home, having a will in place is one of the most meaningful ways to care for the people and causes that matter most.

This month also serves as an important reminder to revisit your existing plans. As life evolves—through loss, new relationships, shifting values, or even a change in perspective—so too can your priorities. Updating your will ensures that your legacy continues to reflect your heart, your story, and your intentions.
Creating or revising a will isn’t just about planning ahead. It’s an act of love, a reflection of your values, and a lasting gift to the people and places that shaped your life.

If you’ve been meaning to start—or simply need to take another look—there’s no better time.

This summer has been full of sunshine, sweet treats, and heartfelt connections across our Sunnyside Communities. This month’s Snapshots of Home captures the little moments that make life here so special, from ice cream socials to sunflower strolls and everything in between.
Residents kicked off July Fourth with a sweet celebration, enjoying a classic ice cream social filled with patriotic spirit. Soon after, a group ventured out to Sunny Slope Farm for Sunflower Sunday, wandering through golden fields and hand-picking bright bouquets to bring a little sunshine back home.
On campus, vendor fairs and community events brought smiles to faces of all ages. Staff and high school volunteers rolled up their sleeves for a car wash to support the annual dementia walk, while others served treats at the Christmas in July Vendor Sale. A special booth, hosted by a staff member’s daughter and her friends, showcased handmade goods to raise funds for their dance expenses and dementia care.
Indoors, Sunnyside’s woodworking group, The Termites, shared their craftsmanship with a live demo. Students and residents spent a colorful afternoon together, tie-dying, playing games, and swapping stories. Joy filled every corner, from dance floors to game tables.
And sometimes, the simple moments shine the brightest. A quick trip to Buc-ee’s, an impromptu dance in the hallway, or a friendly conversation over coffee. These are the threads that weave together the fabric of life at Sunnyside, small and meaningful interactions that feel like home.
We are grateful to share these snapshots with you each month, celebrating the everyday joy of living in community.

At 56, Sandra Ford sat down at a piano and rewrote her life. Sandra Ford’s apartment at King’s Grant is warm and neat, filled with the kind of quiet tidiness that tells you someone has lived a full life: porcelain eggs, a piano tucked near the window, notebooks fat with handwritten scores, and f...

Monty and Joan Montgomery have built a life on steady steps — through innings, classrooms, and more than 50 years of marriage.
From Monty’s days as a Major League pitcher for the Kansas City Royals to Joan’s trailblazing leadership as a principal in Martinsville City Schools, their story is one of hard work, heart, and choosing to show up.
These days, they call King’s Grant home — and they’re just as active as ever. Joan chairs the Residents’ Council, Monty still signs baseball cards from fans, and together they’re living a retirement that’s anything but passive.
Their story is a reminder: you don’t wait for life to happen — you take the field while you still can.

Monty and Joan Montgomery have spent their lives taking steady steps forward — through innings, careers, and more than five decades of marriage. Before all of it, Monty was a standout athlete in Albemarle, North Carolina. In the early 1960s, he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball at Alb...
