Last Friday’s Voices of Peace Symposium, part of January’s Mennonite Heritage Month, was a meaningful day of learning, reflection, and connection. Five sessions explored how Mennonites have responded as peacemakers in different eras of conflict in our nation’s history.

We were grateful to have residents, staff members, community members, and students and teachers from local schools join us. The sessions were well attended, with strong participation and thoughtful engagement throughout the day.

While the majority of our residents and staff today are not part of the Mennonite tradition, the Mennonite ethos from which VMRC emerged in the mid-20th century continues to shape who we are as a community. Values of community, collaboration, stewardship, peacemaking, service, and belonging are widely embraced here and woven into daily life at VMRC.

Meet the dogs of VMRC! 🐾

These four-legged friends brought smiles, comfort, and plenty of tail wags to our community during VMRC’s dog show. From friendly visits to cozy lap time, it was a day full of joy for residents and pups alike. They’re an important part of life at VMRC. 💚

As we enter February, we join our nation in observing Black History Month. This is a meaningful time to intentionally honor the profound contributions, resilience, and rich heritage of Black Americans. Their stories are deeply woven into the fabric of our shared history and are essential to understanding our community and our country.

Here at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, our values are rooted in the Mennonite traditions of peace, community, servant leadership, and respect for the inherent dignity of every person. We believe in building an inclusive community. A place where everyone feels safe, valued, and a sense of belonging. This vision finds beautiful resonance with the themes of Black History Month, which calls us to acknowledge past injustices, celebrate triumphant spirits, and recommit to building a more just and equitable culture for our community.

We invite reflection, respectful conversation, and engagement with learning opportunities both on campus and throughout our broader community. In doing so, we affirm our shared commitment to care, compassion, and the ongoing work of building a more just and welcoming community—one that reflects the peace, dignity, and belonging we strive to uphold.

As we near the end of Mennonite Heritage Month, we continue to celebrate the stories and traditions that shape our community. In this video, VMRC team member Heather Yoder shares a family story that reflects resilience, creativity, and the ways food connects generations.

That tradition lives on today through Bauman's Apple Butter, which inspired a special dessert served in Seed & Harvest this week: Bauman’s Apple Butter Crème Brûlée. Watch the video, then join us at VMRC to enjoy a sweet taste of heritage and hospitality.

Age Well, Live Fully

Situated in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community (VMRC) is where retirement means doing what matters most: aging well and living fully. This philosophy guides everything we do at VMRC and it’s why we are continually innovating -- developing new ideas and better ways of doing things to meet the ever-changing needs of our residents.
