Description:
This position is responsible for providing pastoral care for VMRC residents, with primary assignment to residents and patients in Transitional Care. In collaboration with the Independent Living Chaplain, this position is responsible for the planning and leadership of worship services on Sunday mornings, Sunday vespers services, special services, and other spiritual/emotional wellness programming needs offered on campus. Supports the Supportive Living Chaplain for Complete Living Care’s special services. Serves as a backup for other pastoral care team members. Helps discover spiritual ministry gifts of residents, staff and the broader community and develops plans to utilize them in enriching VMRC’s spiritual life. Serves as a team member of the Wellness and Enrichment service line and supports this team as needed. Engages regularly with Independent Living Leadership team to become aware of and respond to resident needs.
Requirements
Models a Christian lifestyle that expresses a dynamic personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Theological education equivalent to 3 years of seminary study. Additional training in behavioral health/counseling and Clinical Pastoral Education preferred.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in pastoral care, counseling, prayer, teaching, preaching, worship leading and administration required.
Affirmed by a congregation/denomination that they have these gifts (ordained, licensed, and/or qualified for either). Demonstrates a passion for working with senior adults.
Must be self-motivated with a pleasant personality, creativity, good communication, and listening skills.
Must be able to work collaboratively with the Pastoral Care Team and as a member of VMRC’s Wellness and Enrichment team.
Must possess computer experience with ability to use Word, Excel and Outlook.
Must possess a command of the English language, both written and spoken. Must be self-motivated and possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
A. Essential Functions
1. Coordinates and provides pastoral care to VMRC residents and patients in Transitional Care.
a. Implements one-on-one visitations.
b. Works closely with the Transitional Care Leadership Team to identify residents wanting and needing visitation.
c. Provides spiritual support to family members of Transitional Care patients.
d. Attends Patient Care Plan meetings if appropriate.
e. Provides end of life care for patients in Transitional Care.
f. Communicates with and supports resident’s and patient’s primary pastoral/congregation connection if applicable.
g. Focuses on visibility in Transitional Care and all across campus and remains available for informal contacts with residents in various campus settings as well as attends campus functions when appropriate.
h. Leads the Volunteer Chaplain program for Transitional Care including scheduling, communicating and assessment of the program.
2. Collaborates with the Independent Living Chaplain to coordinate and lead the planning of Sunday morning worship services.
a. Actively participates by worship leading along with Pastoral Care Colleagues. Occasionally preaches and/or serves as song leader as gifted.
b. Collaborates with the Independent Living Chaplain to recruit and schedule speakers for Sunday morning worship by maintaining a list of resource persons for worship and Bible Study events.
c. Collaborates with Independent Living Chaplain to recruit and schedule song leaders, special music, greeters, musicians, etc. for Sunday morning worship by maintaining a list of resource persons for worship and Bible Study events.
d. Evaluates each service and records evaluations.
3. Supports the IL Chaplain in the planning of Sunday vespers services.
a. Confirms all vesper programs and maintains calendar of programs. Communicates programs to The Junction and K4.
b. Shares the staffing responsibilities of Sunday Vesper services with the Independent Living Chaplain.
4. Shares the staffing responsibilities of Elder Exchange with the Independent Living Chaplain.
5. Collaborates with the Independent Living Chaplain to lead, coordinate and implement the planning of special all-campus services.
6. Participates in memorial services as requested.
7. Contacts the family of deceased Transitional Care patients with expression of sympathy.
8. Occasionally leads Bible studies across campus.
9. Assists with pastoral care needs of VMRC residents outside of Transitional Care as needed.
10. Lead the Eastern Mennonite Seminary Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) internship on VMRC campus to include coordinating, mentoring, supervising and evaluating the intern experience.
11. Meets regularly with the Pastoral Care Team for mutual support, coordination, sharing opportunities and issue resolution.
12. Provides VP of Wellness and Enrichment with data on the work of the Pastoral Care team.
13. Acts as an emotional wellness ambassador for residents.
a. Engage with residents across campus and with Pastoral Care team to identify spiritual care and emotional wellness needs.
b. Design programming or support services for the resident population, i.e. caregiver support grounds, grief support groups, and guest speakers.
c. Collaborates with Pastoral Care team to assign responsibilities.
14. Serves as a back up to other Pastoral Care team as needed.
15. Meet with the VP of Wellness and Enrichment monthly.
16. Participates in Wellness and Enrichment meetings, typically twice/month.
