We bet your OB-GYN didn't talk about orgasmic birth😏
Midwives typically get more time with their clients (both during check-ups and the birth), giving the opportunity to talk about subjects that can be overlooked in a hospital treatment setting. This can include:
- Labor postures: Hospitals tend to confine labor and birth to a hospital room and bed. A midwife will often encourage mom to move and get fresh air. She will advise on exercises or postures to prepare the body for birth and get the baby in a good position.
- Nutrition: Doctors may assume you're taking a prenatal, and recommend medications for pain or nausea during pregnancy. We love to talk about getting nutrients through whole foods and using natural herbs or supplements to help ease common pregnancy discomforts.
- Breastfeeding and baby's health: In most hospitals, once the baby is born, they will be cared for by a pediatrician, and breastfeeding will be overseen by a lactation consultant. Midwives know that mama's wellbeing is tied to baby's wellbeing, and will address these things together. At Brookhaven, we provide care for 6 weeks postpartum to mom and baby, including a postpartum home visit.
- The fourth trimester: An OB or nurse will talk about postpartum resting and healing, but it can be hard to make that happen. That's why we love to discuss babywearing, meal prepping, getting help around the home, responding to baby's cues, and other ways to ensure a better transition for the whole family. We also talk in advance about signs of postpartum depression and do general check-ins during postpartum visits.
- Orgasm: Midwives like to talk about natural ways to ease pain and support relaxation. One of them is orgasm. By releasing the hormone oxytocin, orgasm can support sleep, alleviate pain, and even help achieve a more pleasurable birth experience. Clients can check out the book "Orgasmic Birth" in our library.
