We are thrilled to introduce the Founding Director of the Morrison Bruce Center, Dr. Judith A. Flohr. Dr. Flohr is a Professor Emerita of Kinesiology at James Madison University. She established the Center to honor Drs. L. Leotus Morrison and Patricia J. Bruce and to foster faculty and student engagement in teaching, research, and outreach that enhances physical activity and health knowledge among girls and women. During her tenure at JMU, Dr. Flohr directed the Human Performance Laboratory, coordinated the Exercise Science and Leadership Program, and taught exercise science courses. She has received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Teaching and Service Awards at JMU, and served as President of the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine. We are proud to honor the remarkable women for whom our Center is named: Dr. Lee Morrison and Dr. Pat Bruce. These visionary leaders paved the way for our mission, and without their groundbreaking work, our outreach programs and research would not be possible.

Drs. Morrison and Bruce devoted their lives to expanding and enriching opportunities for women in physical activity and wellness. Their journeys began in the world of sports-Dr. Bruce as the swim team coach at Madison College, and Dr. Morrison as a basketball and field hockey coach. Their passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment have inspired generations and transformed countless lives in our community.

Thanks to their dedication, we continue to create positive change and empower women every day. To learn more about Dr. Morrison and Dr. Bruce’s inspiring legacy, please visit our website. https://www.jmu.edu/chbs/kinesiology/mbc/index.shtml

In this final Friday Flashback of the summer, we’re once again thinking about our longest running program, OWWL (Older Women Wellness for Life). One of our favorite things about that day is the intergenerational bonding that happens between participants and staff as they spend time learning from and about each other. We’re already excited for our fall plans, including OWWL, and all of our other fall programs that will be coming soon!

TRAIN HARD, RECOVER HARDER!

Your body doesn’t only get strong during a workout, it gets stronger when you rest! Recovery is where the magic happens, helping to rebuild muscles, prevent injuries, and keep you energized for your next session.

Here’s how to recover like a pro:
✅Prioritize sleep (7-9 hours)
✅Hydrate & refuel with nutritious foods
✅Stretch, foam roll, or try yoga
✅Take rest days - your body NEEDS them!

For today’s MBC Advisory Board spotlight meet Dr. Stephanie Kurti-Luden.

Stephanie is a Professor here at JMU and is the exercise science graduate program director. She joined the MBC to help empower girls and women, fostering confidence and strength. She embodies all core pillars of the MBC with knowledge & learning and community building being especially close to her heart. Her favorite MBC moments are helping with EmpowHER and OWWL, and the extra-special joy of hearing her 3.5-year-old daughter come home from preschool excited to share what she learned in Healthy Kids each week! Her advice to staff is to make the most of every opportunity and to learn and grow.

In today’s Friday Flashback we’re highlighting one of our fall programs, Families in Motion. This event is designed to encourage families of preschoolers to be active together. We loved the opportunity to bring this program to two local preschools where we saw so many smiles from kids and parents. Can you remember the last time you rode a scooter or galloped on a hobby horse? These were just two of the many activities where grown-ups got to learn and move alongside their children. Engaging activities about fitness, movement, and nutrition were a recipe for an awesome evening that we hope inspired families to be active together every day.

Pictured here are family members of all ages participating together at the FIM flexibility station.

For today’s MBC Advisory Board spotlight meet Sarah Shepard!!

Sarah currently works at the University of Richmond as the Manager of Fitness and Facilities in University Recreation and she teaches wellness classes. She has always loved exercising and promoting healthy habits. During her undergrad at JMU she joined the MBC as a student staff member and was intrigued by the variety of programs offered and the opportunities to work with women of all ages. She embodies all the core pillars of the MBC but resonates the most with integrity. It is important to be honest with others and yourself. Her favorite memory of the MBC was creating and implementing a 5k color run. She remembers spending time in the MBC office with her friend Izzy, mixing up buckets of color powder for the event. It was messy but fun! Her biggest advice to students involved in the MBC is to step out of your comfort zone. You may be nervous to lead a program but doing so will help you gain confidence for the future in the MBC and beyond.
