Postpartum Hormones & Healing: What You Might Not Know
As a pelvic floor therapist, I see firsthand how powerful (and often overlooked) the role of hormones is in postpartum recovery.
After birth, estrogen and progesterone levels drop sharply. This hormonal shift can affect the way your tissues heal—especially in the pelvic floor.
Some common effects of low estrogen postpartum:
• Slower collagen production = delayed tissue repair
• Vaginal dryness or thinning = discomfort with movement or intimacy
• Decreased elasticity = more sensitivity or tension in healing tissues
• Slower healing of perineal tears, episiotomy sites, or C-section incisions
All of this is NORMAL—but it also means healing may take longer than expected. That’s why postpartum care should be gentle, supportive, and individualized.
Whether you’re weeks or months postpartum, your recovery matters.
If you’re experiencing pelvic pain, leaking, heaviness, or just don’t feel “back to yourself,” you’re not alone—and you don’t have to push through it.
Let’s work with your body, not against it.
