Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), including physician assistants and nurse practitioners, are critical to our healthcare system. By combining diagnostic care and clinical research experiences, these providers help elevate the fields of medicine and nursing to ensure patients and communities receive safe, high-quality, evidence-based care.

We know first-hand the difference these providers can have because we are proud to be led by one.

Our CEO, Sasa Harriott, is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner. Her clinical experience and background has shaped the evidence-based care model we use every day: one that looks beyond wounds and diagnoses to ask why things are the way they are.

It’s why we ask questions like:
✔️ What makes this patient’s situation unique?
✔️ Does the patient have the food, safe housing, and support system they need?
✔️ What barriers stand in the way of long-term recovery?

This National APP Week, we celebrate not only our own leadership but the thousands of APPs across the country whose expertise, compassion, and advocacy make healthcare safer, more equitable, and more effective.

Flu season is coming and it can be serious, especially for older adults, children, and those with chronic health conditions. As the weather gets colder and people head back inside, the flu, along with other respiratory conditions like COVID-19 and RSV, can spread quickly.

Here are five tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe this season:

1️⃣ Get your shots: Vaccines are your first line of defense so it’s important to make sure everyone in your household has the vaccines they need. Remember, Harriott Home Health Services provides in-home vaccination services so if you or someone you know is homebound or needs assistance, contact us today!

2️⃣ Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your face, and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.

3️⃣ Boost your immune system: Stay hydrated, get plenty of sleep, and eat immune boosting foods, like berries, oranges, and leafy greens.

4️⃣ Stay active: Regular exercise, even walking, helps increase circulation of immune cells, which helps your body fight off germs and bacteria.

5️⃣ Prepare your home: Stock up on essentials like tissues, hand sanitizers, and over-the-counter medications to avoid last-minute trips to the store when you already don’t feel well. This protects your community, too!

By taking these simple steps, you can reduce your risk and enjoy a healthier fall season!

The start of a new school year is as exciting as it is stressful. It can pose a variety of challenges, especially for children who require medication for chronic and short term conditions. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, an estimated 25% to 43% of children in the U.S. take medications to treat a variety of health issues, including asthma, diabetes, ADHD, and epilepsy.

Here’s a few quick tips to help you and your family navigate the transition back to school and ensure that your child has access to the medication they need.
🍎 Ask your pharmacist to create a divided supply of medication to easily separate what needs to be taken at home and what needs to be taken at school.
🍎 Explain to your child what each medication does and why it needs to be taken to ensure they understand what it does, why it helps, and why it’s important.
🍎 Use original, pharmacy-labeled containers with clear labels that include the child’s name, medication, dosage, administration route, prescriber, and the expiration date.
🍎 Deliver all medicines in person, not only to ensure that they get where they need to go, but to also avoid any student transport of controlled substances that may violate the law.
🍎 Monitor the supply to ensure that the school health officials have what they need at all times, including for emergencies and field trips.

Managing medication during a school year can be a lot of work, but you’re not alone. Communicate with your child’s school and care team to help make this a happier and healthier school year.

Our home can be our safe place, but after an illness or injury, our homes can pose new risks or be full of new obstacles. A lumpy rug you’ve stepped over a thousand times might suddenly be a tripping hazard. A piece of furniture that partially blocks pathways can make moving through your house a challenge.

Ensuring the space around you can support your recovery is key to achieving a better health outcome.

At Harriott Home Health Services, we help families look at their home with fresh eyes by removing tripping hazards, improving lighting, and setting up easy access to essentials.

Small changes when you first get home can help patients avoid risks and keep your recovery on track.

We see it far too often–caregivers pouring every bit of themselves into their loved one’s care while quietly letting their own needs slip away. Meals get skipped. Sleep gets cut short. Self care gets forgotten.

But it’s important to remember that caring for yourself as a caregiver is an essential part of taking care of them. When you’re rested, nourished, and supported, you have the strength to show up for others.

Caregiving is not something that should be done alone. Our team is here to care for patients and to support the caregivers who take care of them.

Leaving the hospital can be a relief, but it can also feel overwhelming. Patients and families often leave with stacks of papers full of medical terms and instructions that aren’t always clear, especially if you’re tired, worried, or trying to juggle other responsibilities.

But your discharge paperwork is critical to ensuring a smooth transition from hospital to home. They include important information like medication schedules, signs and symptoms to monitor, wound care instructions, and dates for follow-up appointments.

Our team helps patients and their loved ones go through their discharge paperwork to understand the road to recovery and avoid disruptions in care.

When our nurses walk into a home, we’re not just reviewing medication or checking vitals. We’re asking questions about why things are the way they are and noticing everything. Whether there’s food in the fridge, if the AC or heat is working, how the patient gets their medication, or if there’s a way for them to get to follow-up appointments.

Our focus goes beyond treating wounds. Our goal is to address barriers and other factors that may negatively impact a patient’s recovery and overall health.

At Harriott Home Health Services, we know that better health outcomes start by looking beyond the diagnosis and making sure our patients have what they need to truly heal.

We’re proud to receive praise from patients, loved ones, and colleagues alike, including this review from a fellow nurse:

“As a nurse working with developmentally challenged clients, I wholeheartedly recommend this Harriot Home Care agency. They have an exceptional team of nurses who go above and beyond to meet the needs of our clients. In situations where there is an emergency—whether it involves adjusting medications, administering injections, or providing urgent care—their response is outstanding. They are diligent in following up and ensuring that all necessary interventions are completed promptly. I also receive regular updates regarding the care of my other patients under their supervision, which keeps me well-informed and reassured. Families have expressed immense satisfaction with the care provided by this agency, and I couldn’t agree more. Their dedication and professionalism truly make a positive difference in the lives of the clients we serve.”

Did you know that there are 63 million family caregivers across the U.S.?

That’s according to the latest report from AARP, which found that more people than ever before are providing long-term, medical-level care for their loved ones. Many without the training, support, or resources they need, especially among Black and Latino populations.

Here’s what else the report found:
🗓️ 1 in 3 caregivers have provided care for 5 years or more.
🩺 Caregivers are providing more intensive, medicalized care than ever before
💼 70% of working-age caregivers have to balance paid employment and caregiving duties.
💵 Almost half of caregivers have experienced financial stress as a result of caregiving

At Harriott Home Health Services, we see the weight caregivers carry every day. We also see their love, strength, and resilience.

That’s why we offer services that ease the burden from skilled nursing and occupational therapy to support navigating insurance and connecting with the right services.
Because no one should have to do it all alone.
