:: Ayni :: in the Q'ero culture, the native Puerivians living in the Andean mountains, ayni, or sacred reciprocity, is an important principle of way of life.
This concept refers to reciprocity not only amongst community members, but all humans, nature and the universe.
And it's not necessarily linear giving. If I give to you, it doesn't mean you owe me, but that the line of giving must continue in some way to preserve reciprocity. Perhaps you give to someone else, God, or the earth.
The truth is, most of us - myself included - don't think about this enough. Our western culture teaches us to be hyper independent, extractive, and take for profit. We even travel to other countries in the name of spiritual progress, and still, we take more than we give. But this is not the true way of life as it is intended.
I know I can often get caught up in my own experience and become self absorbed, forgetting to extend kindness or a helping hand, to slow down and pray, to extend gratitude or a hug, to lay an earth altar at the feet of God by the river...
So today, I left an earth altar of flowers and cacao beans in gratitude for all the earth provides. In gratitude of the year of legacy behind me and the year of locking in ahead of me. I am so grateful for the support of the earth as our literal sustainer and life giver, but also an elemental ally who continously reminds me to stay grounded and remember whats important.
What a blessed life we live. What a gift it is that it's so incredibly easy to preserve and spread the principle of Ayni and I encourage you all to do so this week, to slow down for even a few moments to make an offering in sacred reciprocity for we recieve so much from this life.
