Antenatal colostrum harvesting — let’s talk about it.

Your body begins producing colostrum long before your baby is born. After 37 weeks, some mothers choose to hand express and freeze small amounts to have available after birth if needed.

Hand expression is typically more effective than a pump for collecting colostrum because it’s thick and produced in very small amounts. Pumps are designed for higher milk volumes, not sticky drops.

Having extra colostrum on hand can be helpful in certain situations (like blood sugar concerns or early feeding challenges), but it’s important to know:

* it is not required.
* it does not predict your future milk supply
* it is not a measure of how your breastfeeding journey will go

Always discuss with your provider before starting, as there are some circumstances where antenatal expression is not recommended.

Learning hand expression is a valuable skill regardless. When used in the first few days postpartum, it has been shown to support milk production and improve longer-term breastfeeding outcomes.

If you’re planning to exclusively breastfeed, this can be a great way to prepare for the journey ahead 🙌

Emerging from my own postpartum cocoon to check in & give some updates 💛

Baby boy #2 will be 7 months tomorrow… woah! These babies don’t keep 🥹

I took a step back from the business while adjusting to life as a family of four, but I’m back!! 🥳

I have a few repeat clients on my calendar for this summer and I’m officially opening my books back up for new postpartum and lactation clients. Birth doula work is on pause as of right now.
