Thank you to the 60+ leaders, partners, community members, and advocates who joined us on January 23rd for a truly inspiring morning. We came together to look at how national policy and funding changes are shaping access to care and what those shifts mean for Connecticut. Our state’s legislative champions shared visions and priorities for the legislative session, and we sparked fresh conversations together about the connection between oral and overall health, the value of prevention, and the policy solutions that can drive lasting change. Thank you for helping us kick off the new year with robust energy for ! 🦷πŸ’ͺ

February is - did you know gum health affects overall health?

Gum disease, otherwise known as gingivitis or periodontitis, is inflammation in the mouth that can lead to decreased blood flow to vital organs, increased risk of heart disease, respiratory conditions, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancers. It can also make existing chronic health conditions worse.

Gum disease can be treated by a dental professional if needed; but there are easy steps you can take to prevent it altogether. Make sure to visit your dentist regularly for cleanings, brush your teeth twice a day, and make it a habit to floss daily. Your gums (and entire body) will thank you! 🦷πŸͺ₯

This part of your body is often overlooked, but it can have a major impact on your overall health. Here's how.

February is Heart Health Monthβ€”and your mouth plays a bigger role than you might think in keeping your heart healthy! Gum disease and inflammation in the mouth are linked to a higher risk of heart disease, which means daily brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits are good for more than just your teeth. Oral health care and heart health care are just meant to go hand-in-hand. πŸ«€πŸ¦·πŸ’“

Last week, COHI's Executive Director Gary Turco, Policy & Advocacy Director Sandra Ferreira-Molina, and Community Champion Fellow Kirsten Ferguson visited the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain and learned all about their unique approach to desensitize children with special needs to make them more comfortable at the dentist's office. 🦷🧸

Using a sensory-informed, patient-centered approach, the Hospital’s Dental Desensitization Program helps children and adults who may struggle in a traditional dental environment become more comfortable and confident receiving care. Thank you to amazing staff at the Hospital for Special Care for their hard work in developing and running this critical program, and thank you for having us so we could see it in action!
