Chef Lena Richard was a domestic cook until the family she worked for paid for her to attend culinary school. After graduating she opened a home based catering service that grew quickly. Her work led her to become the very first black woman ( maybe even the first black person) to have her own cooking show. This paved the way for many black women today, who are chefs, authors, and media stars, women like , and Tabitha Brown. She wrote and published a cookbook called, "The New Orleans Cookbook" and opened two restaurants shortly after.
