Pre-eclampsia is a serious disorder of blood pressure that occurs during pregnancy and/or in the weeks following delivery.
The symptoms include; shortness of breath, pain in the upper abdomen or shoulder, sudden weight gain, new-onset of nausea/vomiting in the 2nd half of pregnancy, swelling of hands or face, headache that does not resolve and visual changes (blurry/spots or changes in eyesight)
Pre-eclampsia can affect anyone even patient's without identified risk-factors. Some risk factors include; pre-existing high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, auto-immune disorders, pre-eclampsia in previous pregnancies or being pregnant with more than 1 baby (twins/triplets or more).
Pre-eclampsia affects 1 in 25 pregnancies in the United States.
