Dry eye disease affects between 5-15% of the US population. Twice as many women are affected compared to men, and many factors can cause dry eyes, such as s*x, age, systemic disease, medications, environmental factors, contact lenses, and beauty products. Over-the-counter medicines and prescription drops for dry eye can be helpful, as well as supplements for dryness, omega 3's, hot compresses or heated eye masks, and lifestyle changes. Another factor often contributing to the symptoms of dry eye is eye makeup. Many of the ingredients found in eye makeup do not have to be FDA-approved and are toxic to the ocular surface of the eye. See the information below regarding ingredients to avoid and some eye makeup brands that are less toxic to the eye and may help your dry eye symptoms.
