I want to thank Partnership for a Drug-Free Community for asking me to share a little of my recovery journey and for sharing stories all month for Recovery Awareness Month! The work they do is amazing!!

September is National Recovery Month. Each day we will feature the story of someone in recovery and give hope to those still struggling. ❤️

My name is Summer and I'm a person in long term recovery. For 22 years my life centered around drink and using and finding ways and means to use and get more. First I want to say my substance abuse had absolutely nothing to do with the way I was raised. Every thing I did in addiction went against everything I was taught growing up. I do believe it had everything to do with trauma i experienced at a young age. After many trips to jail, so many failed attempts at recovery, the loss of my children, and almost the loss of my life, on May 18th 2012 I made one last attempt at recovery but this time the disease of addiction had beat me into a state of willingness I didn't even know existed and that willingness is why I'm still sober today 13 years later.

Today my life is completely different. I'm married to the most amazing man, who is also in long term recovery, I am finally the mother that my children deserve, I am a grandmother to 9 beautiful grandchildren that only know this version on me, and I get to work with other women in recovery. I'm so thankful for a 12 step program that not only saved my life but teaches me daily how to keep it. Recovery works you just have to be willing to go to any lengths to achieve it.

Breaking the Silence: Ending the Stigma Around Substance Use Disorder.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It’s not a moral failing or a sign of weakness — it’s a medical condition that requires understanding, compassion, and support.

Too often, individuals with SUD face judgment, discrimination, and isolation. This stigma prevents many from seeking help, which can worsen their struggles and delay recovery. It’s time to change the narrative.

Here’s what we need to remember:

💙 SUD is a health condition, not a character flaw.
Just like diabetes or hypertension, it’s a chronic illness that can be managed with treatment, support, and understanding.

💙 People with SUD are more than their addiction.
They are friends, family members, colleagues, and community members deserving of dignity and compassion.

💙 Recovery is possible.
With the right care, hope, and community support, people can and do recover every day.

Let’s choose empathy over judgment.
By educating ourselves and others, challenging stereotypes, and speaking out against discrimination, we can create a world where everyone feels safe to seek help without fear of shame.

Remember: Addiction is a disease, not a destiny. Let’s work together to end the stigma, one conversation at a time.

Celebrating National Recovery Month: The Power of Hope and Resilience

Did you know? Recovery from substance use disorder (SUD) is achievable, and millions are reclaiming their lives every day.
- Approximately 23 million Americans are in recovery from SUD.
- The rate of remission from substance use disorders is comparable to other chronic illnesses like diabetes and hypertension.
- With access to treatment and support, individuals are more likely to maintain sobriety and improve overall health and well-being.

This month, we honor those on their recovery journey and recognize the importance of reducing stigma, increasing awareness, and expanding access to support services. Recovery is not just possible—it’s a path to hope, health, and renewal.
