Better late than never....happy International Women's Day! The Women's Tea hosted by Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center was full of tips and inspiration from influential women in our community. A recurring theme was finding the right balance between work and family. Natural and holistic medicine is ultimately about finding balance in many areas, which requires intentionality and a good plan. Message me if you are on a healing journey and need support!

Homeopathic medicines are very important to me as a naturopathic practitioner because, when carefully matched to the individual, they can dramatically assist the healing process. They integrate mind and body in a gentle yet powerful way, and are one of my favorite tools for helping children and very sensitive people.

The FDA has historically recognized homeopathic medicines as a unique and separate category of drugs due to their incredible safety profile. However, after over 80 years of regulating the legal sale of homeopathic medicines in the U.S., the FDA now interprets the law to say that 1) all homeopathic products are “unapproved new drugs” which are “marketed illegally” and 2) these products can therefore be removed from the market at will.

Americans for Homeopathy Choice has just introduced a bill in Congress to protect access to this safe and effective form of natural medicine. Please take 30 seconds to follow the link and send the letter to your representatives today. Thank you for your support!

Oh the irony that we are rescheduling our Food as Medicine for Inflammation workshop right after I posted about how mild the winters are here! This picture is from 4 years ago, and it was the last (and only snow) I have experienced here. The Alaskan in me wants the show to go on, but my practical South Carolinian husband tells me the reality is different here. I hope you will be able join us on February 28th!

Our Story

As I was pulling the trailer down to South Carolina to start our new life in Hartsville, I knew I would miss the friends we had made and the practice we had built during our 11 years in Brevard, North Carolina. But already I was missing the mountains! Driving along the monotonous highway, I started musing over what to call my new practice when the name Kalmia Wellness popped into my head.

Kalmia latifolia is the botanical name for mountain laurel, a beautiful shrub which is abundant in the mountains of Western North Carolina. It is normally not found in the flat lands (as the name implies), but at Kalmia Gardens in Hartsville there is a steep north-facing bluff where the mountain laurel thrives. I had always enjoyed wandering through Kalmia Gardens during previous visits to my husband’s home town. Now this lovely and peaceful oasis is my little piece of the mountains right here in Hartsville!

At Kalmia Wellness we use nature as our guide. Studies show that spending time in nature, whether hiking on mountain trails or sitting on the porch listening to the birds, reduces stress. We can also access the healing power of nature through the food we choose and the plant medicines we find all around us. The common dandelion that persistently shows up in our lawns contains valuable compounds that help detoxify the body!

My goal is to empower you to achieve your health goals. Taking the time to listen to you and your story is a very important part of the process. There is more to your health than the sum of your symptoms. Education is always a big part of what I do, helping you determine what is and isn’t working and implementing a doable plan to make healthy lifestyle changes. Real food nutrition is the gas that powers your engine, while custom herbal formulas, targeted nutrients, and specific homeopathic remedies further open the doors to deep healing. Welcome to the journey!
