A= Articulation

In speech-language pathology, ARTICULATION refers to the physical production of speech sounds with coordinated movements of the “articulators” (e.g., larynx, respiratory system, jaw, tongue, lips, cheeks, soft palate).

Here is a general chart that corresponds with age and speech sound development based on findings from McLeod & Crowe (2018).

There are several different categories of speech sound disorders, depending on differential diagnosis and presenting symptoms. I’ll break them down in upcoming posts!

A-Z for the SLP… where to start? ADVOCACY

From Merriam-Webster: Noun: the act or process of supporting a cause or proposal : the act or process of advocating

Advocacy means different things for different people.

An SLP might support a client as they learn to successfully self-advocate by learning/ re-learning to communicate. A parent may be learning to successfully advocate for their child’s needs. A medical professional may have to advocate for patient/ client needs. An educational advocate may work with a family to advocate for a student’s educational needs.

Last week I posted “Don’t try this at home” and many people said that saying “say” works!

And well, yes- this can get a child to say a word. I do this often when working on articulation - because that’s focusing on the sounds a child makes. But when we are working on supporting communication development - saying “say” can be confusing for gestalt language processors AND creates prompt dependency.

I’d much rather just say the word (ie “car”) and see if the child can learn the word naturally and ideally use it in the future authentically rather than being prompted. ❤️

If a child can attempt verbal imitation but struggles saying “trick-or-treat” it is helpful to simplify it to “tih-oh-tee.”

Speech simplification is a strategy used in speech therapy for children who are struggling to find their voice.

If the child continues to struggle even with the simplification, practice saying “tih-oh-tee” in unison.
