Most people think of an eye exam as the part where you cover one eye and read letters off a wall. It is a lot more than that.

Red, itchy, watery eyes. You grab the drops from the medicine cabinet, use them for a few days, and nothing really changes. Sound familiar?

The problem is that dry eye, eye allergies, and pink eye all feel remarkably similar but respond to completely different treatments. Using antihistamine drops for dry eye actually dries the surface further. Using lubricating drops for allergies does almost nothing for the itch.

Here's the quick version: burning and gritty usually means dry eye. Intense itching, especially seasonal, usually means allergies. Discharge and one eye starting before the other usually means pink eye, and that one you want to see a doctor for.

There are also symptoms that need same-day attention: a sudden increase in floaters with flashing lights, brief vision loss, eye pain with nausea and halos, or a blurry spot specifically in the center of your vision. Those are not things to wait out.

If you have been gripping the steering wheel a little tighter after dark, squinting at headlights, or quietly rerouting to avoid highway driving once the sun goes down, this one is for you.

Poor night vision is one of the most common things patients bring up at Rivertown Eye Care, and one of the most overlooked. Most people assume it is just aging. Most of the time, it is not.

Cataracts scatter incoming light into glare and halos. An outdated prescription that works fine in daylight gets significantly worse when your pupils dilate at night. Dry eye disrupts the tear film and blurs your vision in exactly the conditions that make driving hardest. Astigmatism turns every oncoming headlight into a starburst. Glaucoma begins by stealing peripheral vision, which is exactly what night driving depends on.

Most of these are treatable. All of them are diagnosable at a comprehensive eye exam.
