Hare's Meadow Farm Equine Wellness Helping Horses Thrive Naturally First and foremost, it began with tragedy. It was sad to hear because she was so young and spirited and seemed so full of talent.

Flora’s Legacy
FOR LOVE OF THE HORSE·WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2018·
I’ve been putting off posting my journey to natural horse care for a number of reasons. However, it is important to me that what happened to Flora becomes a learning experience and that she is always remembered. Flora was a 2 year old thoroughbred filly with a personality that was unlike any other horse I have ever met. She was involved in a tragic accident that left her with a broken coffin bone and fractured sesamoid bone. The vet at the time was optimistic that she could heal but she would never have a career. I had a friend who had recently healed her broken foot rapidly and naturally with homeopathy and supplements. I called her that night and made a list. I also looked up everything I could on healing sesamoid and coffin bones. I found a few things that looked very promising and spoke with her owner (a close friend of mine) about implementing them. She was on board and we got started. Flora’s situation became more complicated when her hoof capsule started to come off and there was infection as well. Again I scoured the internet and ended up finding Angie from Equine Essential Wellness. She stressed the importance of clean nutrition, and gave me some information on a few supplements that would help assist with the infection and hoof issue. Unfortunately, we were never able to implement them. Flora was euthanized a few days later. I remember how sad I was when the supplements arrived in the mail a few days after she was gone. I never wanted to feel that helpless ever again. So I began reading and taking online courses and implementing what I learned with my mare Harley. I eventually took her off the synthetics and fortified grains. I wanted her to have a great foundation so that if she ever came across a health concern or injury, she would have the best chance. Now, my mission is to help as many horses and their owners as possible. I always come from a place of love for the horse and compassion for their owners. I understand how scary it can be to revamp your horse’s nutrition and care so I don’t get pushy or judgy. I do however encourage everyone reading this to educate themselves on their feed and supplement choices. It took the injury and death of a friend’s beloved horse to put me on this path of natural horse care. It is my strong hope that this path leads to saving others. Flora will have a special place in my heart for as long as I live. Thanks for reading! Tonya~ The Happy Horse Chick

DO HORSES REALLY ENJOY BEING TOUCHED, OR JUST TOLERATE IT?

Touch is part of almost every interaction we have with horses – grooming, routine handling, tacking-up, vet visits, even a pat after a ride. Touch is also a routine feature of equine-assisted services, yet surprisingly little is known about how horses themselves experience it. Do they actually enjoy it, or does their experience depend on having the choice to engage – the freedom to say yes, or no?

A recent study compared two situations using therapy horses who were regularly involved in equine-assisted services. In the ‘forced touch’ condition, horses were tied up and touched continuously on different body areas (neck/shoulder, body, hindquarters) using patting, stroking, or scratching. In the ‘free-choice’ condition, horses were loose in a round pen and could only be touched if they chose to come close enough.

The results showed clear differences. Horses showed more stress-linked behaviours – oral movements, restlessness, and tail swishing – when touched without the option to move away. When free to choose, they often carried their heads lower (a sign of relaxation) and spent over half of the session out of arm’s reach. Stroking was more often linked with relaxed, low head carriage than scratching or patting, and touches on the hindquarters produced fewer stress responses than touches on the neck or body.

The researchers also looked at how the horses responded to different kinds of people. Around experienced handlers, horses were more likely to hold their heads high and showed lower heart-rate variability – signs of vigilance or anticipation, perhaps expecting work. In contrast, their responses with less experienced people were generally more relaxed.

Touches on the hindquarters were linked with fewer stress behaviours, while touches on the neck and body produced more tail swishing and less relaxed postures. Horses were also more likely to lower their heads – a calmer signal – when touched on the body or hindquarters than on the neck.

Why does this matter? Horses in all kinds of contexts – riding schools, competition yards, therapy programmes, or leisure homes – are routinely touched and handled. These findings show that the manner of touch, the part of the body involved, and above all the horse’s ability to choose whether to participate all shape how she/he/they experience the interaction.

The welfare implications are clear: allowing horses more agency in how and when we touch them may reduce stress, strengthen trust, and make interactions safer and more positive for everyone.

For me, the sad part of these findings is that horses are rarely given a choice about when or how they are touched. And many people don’t recognise when touch is causing the horse stress.

All of our biggest fears while hauling is getting in an accident. Last night there was a horrific accident in bradenton florida. A local business that does beach rides was heading home after a day of rides. They had several horses in the rig. They were t-boned and the entire rig ended up upside down in a ditch. One horse was killed immediately and the others are severely injured. Both people in the truck are currently in the hospital.

If vets info gets shared with me so that people can donate towards the vet bills i will share info here. Same goes for a go fund me. I will share any other details as they become available.

Remove Horses from the Olympics: End Abuse by Pro Riders

06/26/2024

Horses are miraculously designed by nature to thrive on their own. Since captivity however, humans have deeply impacted their quality of life. There are measurable and predictable consequences when we fail to provide the essential ingredients to compliment nature's design. By aligning with this mand...

This is one reason why we work alongside horses.
Add to this the fact that a prey animal is willing to assist a predator in balancing our emotions, developing leadership skills, communication skills, relationship skills, teamwork, body language skills, problem solving skills, compassion and so much more.
All of these things that naturally exist in a herd for their very survival, they are wanting to teach us if we know how to listen.
I cannot wait to get started.

I’ll be taking guinea pig clients soon
Let me know if you’re interested 🤩

I think it’s time we start doing better for these amazing creatures They are so forgiving and deserve better

Exactly...Such a sad screaming contrast in this picture between the smiling human face and the horse's expression... There just can be no fun at all if it means to make someone else suffer 💔

I just love this
I have FINALLY found a “natural horsemanship” trainer that actually puts the horse first.
I have learned so much about the true nature of horses and so many people really need to update how they view these incredible creatures.
There is so so much more to them than we’ve been taught
