Very interesting study that shows a potential benefit from exercise related to shifting the oral micro biome to a more favorable flora.

Conclusion
To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine differences in the supragingival plaque and tongue microbiome between highly trained and untrained individuals at the species level using long-read 16 s rRNA sequencing. While supragingival plaque showed no differences, the tongue dorsum microbiome differed significantly, with higher relative abundances of health-associated unclassified Gemella species and R. mucilaginosa in highly trained competitive athletes compared to healthy inactive controls.

We also demonstrate that consistent intensive exercise training alters the oral microenvironment, with increased salivary NO3- and NO2- levels compared to untrained controls, which may further support the development of a health-associated oral microbiome.

The robust methodologies employed in this study highlight a possible link between consistent exercise and the development of an oral microbiome conducive to health. However, further research is needed to explore the mechanisms connecting exercise, the oral microbiome, and overall health.

The oral microbiome has a crucial role in nitric oxide (NO) production and contributes to oral and systemic health. This study compared oral microbiome composition and markers of NO production between highlytrained competitive athletes and inactive controls. Competitive athletes and untrained contro...

Great information from an excellent tooth paste company!

Fluoride was added to drinking water in the early 1900s as an experiment - with no long-term safety studies. The idea was simple: maybe swallowing fluoride would help protect teeth.

But fluoride is meant to be topical, not ingested. That’s what most dental students aren’t taught to question.

And now? Fluoride is everywhere... water, processed food, tea, even medications. Which means your daily exposure is often much higher than you realize.

Recent studies, including one in JAMA Pediatrics, show strong correlations between high fluoride intake and lowered IQ in children. Other research links fluoride to issues like interference with iodine uptake and even skeletal fluorosis.

Meanwhile, 97% of the world doesn’t fluoridate their water - and cavity rates are often lower thanks to education and prevention, not mass medication.

So what’s the alternative? At Wellnesse, we believe in protecting your enamel without the risks. Our fluoride-free toothpaste is powered by hydroxyapatite (the mineral your teeth are made of) and baking soda, which work together to neutralize acids and rebuild enamel naturally.

You don’t need fluoride to fight cavities. You need the right minerals.

A fun email that got sent out from the Wellnesse company featuring Dr. Anthony and our emphasis on decay prevention. The email talks about our recommendations for home care in the context of using their products. The Wellnesse toothpaste is one of our favorites due to being high quality, fluoride free, and including hydroxyapatite (calcium and phosphate minerals) and baking soda (the key to acid neutralization). Of course, flossing, tongue scraping, and some suggestions on mouthwash and oral probiotics can all be excellent additions to a thorough home care routine. We go over all of this in depth during new patient appointments when we discuss step by step how to remineralize enamel!

Did you know? Meetinghouse Dental Care has high powdered HEPA filters in every operatory room. Originally, their purpose was to protect patient, doctor, and staff from mercury v***r while drilling on an amalgam filling. While still used for this purpose every day, they are now also turned on a lower setting for all dental appointments to create a continually clean air environment at all times. We also have a powerful full room filtration unit in our waiting room that is always on to to better protect our patients while they wait for their appointment. Clean air is always important to good health, outside and inside. Some buildings, like dental offices, are notoriously high in smells, fumes, and v***r. We go through great precautions to eliminate that exposure to our staff and patients!

This concept applies to oral health as well. If all your dentist has to offer is fluoride and a recommendation to brush and floss more, they are not addressing the foundational problem, and patient’s will suffer. While home care is always important to remove food from the mouth, supporting the saliva’s ability to neutralize acids is critical to controlling demineralization / remineralization, and ultimately stopping or reversing the decay process. Nutrition plays a major role in oral health!

While disease specific nutrition has its place, most conditions can be resolved by the consistent addressing of general, foundational concepts. Diet, movement, sleep. Healthy lifestyle choices. Day in, day out. No magic pill. No fancy treatment. Just consistent effort and a determination to make a change.

Meetinghouse Dental is an adult Biologic Dental office. We begin seeing kids between the ages of 16-18 for the very simple reason of our dental instruments and sensors do not fit into the tiny mouths of kids.

Fortunately, we have an amazing relationship with one of the best Biologic Pediatric Dental Offices in the country. We just happen to be lucky that she practices right near by in Newtown!

Dr. Joanna Walska opened Giggles n’ Smiles in October 2023 and have been helping the kids of our office ever since!

Her office is located:
770 Newtown Yardley Rd. Suite 224 Newtown PA 18940

The oral probiotic we carry in our office mentioned in the last post (Great Oral Health) contains a blend of 7 different oral bacteria chosen for their specific beneficial properties and synergistic action. With three months of nightly use, it is designed to slowly shift the microbiome of the mouth to establish a more balanced / positive flora. After three months, most patients can discontinue use, maybe using 1-2 bottles a year for touch ups as needed or preventative reasons.

The strains of bacteria:

Streptococcus salivarius (BLIS K-12) – The predominant nondisease-associated colonizer of a healthy oral microbiome. Extremely effective in reducing bad breath. Helps prevent oral inflammation. Produces at least two different bacteriocins that inhibit the growth of undesirable bacteria.

Streptococcus salivarius (BLIS M-18) – BLIS stands for “bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances,” and refers to the bacteria’s ability to produce antibiotic-like compounds that inhibit the colonization and growth of less desirable bacteria, resulting in less bleeding, less plaque formation, and less cavities.

Streptococcus thermophilus – Strain that stimulates growth of other probiotics. Commonly used as a starter culture for yogurts. Works synergistically with lactobacillus strains to encourage proliferation and binding. Produces antibiotic chemicals to prevent certain infections like pneumonia and C. difficile. Can also help prevent ulcers.

Lactobacillus acidophilus – All lactobacillus strains can produce antimicrobial compounds such as hydrogen peroxide, carbon peroxide, diacetyl, bacteriocins, and adhesion inhibitors effective in controlling strep mutans and other pathogens.

Lactobacillus salivarius – Protects against bad breath. Provides a salivary pH buffering mechanism that results in an oral environment conducive to remineralization and cavity prevention. Reduces plaque formation and periodontal pockets.

Lactobacillus paracasei – Reduces acid production because it cannot ferment sucrose. Suppresses growth of strep mutans and other periodontal pathogens. Inhibits plaque formation.

Lactobacillus reuteri – Produces a compound called reuterin, a broadspectrum antimicrobial substance that is effective against multiple pathogens. Also reduces general bleeding and inflammation (gingivitis).

Oral Probiotics are back in stock!

Oral home care is designed to remove food debris along with bacteria and their homes (plaque). The problem is that home care provides only a temporary (still extremely important) fix. Once bacteria are removed, it takes only 30 minutes for them to begin to repopulate. Oral probiotics can institute a long-term shift in the strains of bacteria that return to colonize, decreasing decay rates, gum disease, and bad breath. Oral probiotics fix so many issues commonly (and incorrectly) blamed on genetics.

The oral probiotics from Great Oral Health is our favorite product. The blend of 7 bacterial strains are preserved in a freeze-dried tablet. The strains activate when the tablet dissolves in saliva. The beneficial bacteria initiate a healthy colonization of your mouth. For daily use, dissolve a tablet in the mouth right after brushing and flossing at night. Don’t rinse or drink for 30 minutes.

Ion Gut health (previously called Restore) is a very cool product designed specifically for leaky gut. We have carried it in office for years. Without a healthy gut and proper absorption, we cannot get the minerals we need from our food to support long term oral health. The product was developed by Dr. Zach Bush, one of the leading experts in the field of gut health, who is also one of the most intelligent and genuinely kind people I have ever met.
