Keeping the ozone theme going, here is a cool picture / post from the IAOMT on ozone in dentistry!

In recent years, ozone therapy in the dental office setting has emerged as a very exciting addition for dental professionals to use in disinfection and healing of teeth, gums, and bones. Ozone is three atoms of oxygen bound together as O3 (three oxygen atoms). In nature, it is created when oxygen in...

Ozone is extremely anti - bacterial, viral, and fungal. It can also kill spirochetes and mold. It is very useful in the dental field for sterilizing tooth preparations after deep decay removal. It can also be used to help with infections on both root canaled and non root canaled teeth (please note, it cannot bring a dead nerve back to life).

It can be used with periodontal therapy to target an erotic bacteria in deep pockets. It can be used in ozonated oil form to wound healing other in the mouth and out.

It can also be used for nasal and ear insufflation to address sinus issues and ear problems. In order to safely breathe the ozone, it is bubbled through olive oil to encapsulate the gas with a lipid, allowing it to pass by mucus membranes without coughing. In the sinus, the ozone provides the desired antimicrobial benefits. After the sinus, the ozone travels into the lungs, through the capillaries, and into the blood stream. Once absorbed, the lipid breaks off and the ozone (O3) combines with water (H2O) to create hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and oxygen (O2). Pretty cool science!

Flashback to when Dr. Anthony got a chance to present to a group of biologic dentists and hygienists at the IAOMT on enamel remineralization and decay prevention. Can’t believe it has already been two years.

Dr. Anthony got the opportunity to present today at the IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology) conference in Cesars Palace Las Vegas. We have been educating patients on decay prevention and enamel remineralization for over 10 years at Meetinghouse Dental, and we think this is something that would be extremely beneficial for all dental offices to incorporate for their patients. Proper education on home care and nutrition to remove foods and balance salivary/plaque acids allow the patient to take a more proactive approach to decay prevention!

Ozone therapy is a leading-edge, holistic, non-invasive medical treatment that is effective against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It also can stimulate blood circulation, platelets, and healthy immune response. It is a highly advanced and potentially preventative alternative to dental surgery. It can also be used in conjunction with certain dental surgeries – in order to make procedures safer and more effective.

Great Study on Ozone in Periodontal Therapy

To summarize… Key question:
Does adjunctive ozone therapy improve periodontal clinical parameters (probing depth, gingival inflammation, bleeding, plaque levels, and attachment loss) in patients with chronic periodontitis compared to conventional scaling and root planing (SRP) alone?

Results
Probing Depth reduction showed significant reduction in 655 total patients.
Interpretation: Ozone + SRP reduces pocket depth more than SRP alone, but variability in ozone application methods may influence results. Both ozone water and gas were studied. Ozone reduces gingival inflammation, likely due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.

Ozone showed no significant difference when looking at Bleeding on Probing.
Interpretation: Bleeding is usually caused by inflammation, but may also be influenced by systemic factors (e.g., smoking, diabetes) not fully controlled in studies.

Plaque Index & Clinical Attachment Level also showed no significant improvements. Interpretation: Ozone may not enhance plaque control or tissue regeneration beyond SRP alone. Ozone is antimicrobial, but once calculus starts to form, ozone alone is not enough to remove it.

Conclusions
Ozone therapy along with SRP is superior to SRP alone in reducing probing depth and gingival inflammation, suggesting benefits in pocket depth and inflammation control. No significant effects on BOP, PI, or CAL, indicating ozone may not improve all periodontal parameters. Ozone is safe & well-tolerated: no adverse events reported.

My interpretation: While ozone is an incredible antimicrobial gas that should absolutely be used in biologic periodontal therapy, it is not a cure all. To better address bone loss, gingival inflammation / bleeding, and overall periodontal health, I would utilize other adjuncts like oil pulling, salt water, colloidal silver, red/blue light therapy, and oral probiotics on top of professional hygiene cleanings.

Enamel fractures on teeth with old mercury fillings is such a common thing to see. It is always humorous to hear the old rhetoric of “metal fillings are stronger than composites” when in reality they literally weaken the surrounding tooth structure over time. Then, when the tooth fractures, the restoration required to fix the problem is always larger than the original mercury filling. Biocompatible composite fillings do not had this expansion issue, and in fact, due to how they are bonded in, can actually strengthen or reinforce minor stress fractures when restoring a tooth.

Besides toxicity, what other problems do Silver Mercury Fillings have?
One of the main reasons why Mercury Amalgam Fillings are such a poor material for filling a tooth is that it expands on heating and contracts on cooling.

The Mouth is a Window to the Body.

What happens in your mouth doesn’t stay in your mouth. Inflammation, toxins, and infection in the oral cavity can influence chronic illness, heart health, immune balance, and even brain function. Our job is to make sure nothing in the mouth could potentially be impacting the rest of the body. Education and patient participation is key.

🦷 That’s why as a biologic dental office, we treat every smile as part of the whole person — safely, naturally, and with compassion. Whole-body health begins with holistic dental care.

Root canals may “save a tooth” by keeping it in your mouth — but at what cost to your overall health?

Even the most carefully treated root canal can leave behind trapped bacteria and toxins within microscopic tubules. Overtime, the dried out side canals promote additional microbial harboring. The bacteria and their toxins can lead to chronic inflammation and systemic health issues.

Certain biological therapies are used in office like ozone instead of antibiotics, laser instead of chemicals like chlorhexidine, and PRF (platelet rich fibrin) instead of bone grafts, but we stress, none of these are a magic wand to bring an already dead nerve back to life.

At Meetinghouse Dental Care, we take root canals seriously, never over prescribing as an easy way out to fix sensitivity. If a tooth truly has a dead nerve, then a root canal becomes a clinical option to avoid an active infection (abscess). However, for long-term oral stability and overall health, we prefer extraction under biological protocol. We always discuss all options and ultimately, it is the patient’s decision to make.

Your mouth is connected to your whole body — and we treat it that way.
