Earlier this week, Our Co-Presidents, Brooke and Carlton, and our Vice President, Sophie, attended RMEC, an annual event hosted by SNMA for pre-med and medical students.

Carlton and Sophie presented their research, showcasing their hard work and dedication to making a difference in healthcare. We are so proud of their efforts.

Attending events like RMEC is such an eye-opener—it’s not only a chance to network but also to see firsthand the opportunities that come with stepping up on the board and getting involved. From research presentations to connecting with professionals and peers, these experiences are game-changers!

USM MAPS had a busy week last week hosting our first events of the semester! We began the week with our Gift of Life Marrow Registry Donor Drive where we were able to collect over 30 life-saving swabs! On Wednesday, MAPS members participated in USM's annual Student Involvement Fair where we educated students about our MAPS mission and goals and encouraged students to get involved on campus! We finished the week with a Disability and Inclusion Training where members learned how to be more mindful of accessibility and inclusive towards those with disabilities in our leadership roles, future careers, and our personal lives. Our first week of events was a success, and MAPS would like to thank everyone who volunteered, attended, and participated! MAPS would also like to extend a special thanks to Ms. Vivian O'Neal, who hosted the training session. Ms. O'Neal was recently crowned Miss Mississippi 2023 and is the founder of the nonprofit, CapABLE, which aims to equip educators with disability inclusion resources to empower all students. Starting at 4 pm on September 14th, the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students will be hosting a Disability Inclusion Training workshop led by Southern Miss graduate student and founder of CapABLE, Vivian O’Neal. Join us to gain awareness, knowledge, and the skills to practice inclusive behavior in any professional environment!
