Every baby deserves the safest start in life. Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) remains a leading cause of infant loss, and recent trends have raised concern across Mississippi.

In August, the Mississippi State Department of Health declared a public health emergency in response to rising infant mortality rates, part of which is due to SUID.

According to Anita S. Henderson, MD, with Hattiesburg Clinic The Pediatric Clinic, a baby in Mississippi dies from SUID every four days.

Families and caregivers can reduce risk by following safe sleep practices and creating a secure sleep environment for infants.

Dr. Henderson urges parents and caregivers to not fall asleep while holding their baby. “If you do, there is a 67 times greater chance of SUID,” she warns. “Please put your baby to sleep in their crib or bassinet before you accidentally fall asleep holding them.”

As a nurse practitioner with Dermatology – South, Box works alongside Elizabeth Francis Rose, MD, FAAD, to provide comprehensive dermatologic care for all ages, skin types and skin conditions.
