PUBLIC SERVICE ALERT: Medicare Urinary Catheter Scam
Hattiesburg Clinic is alerting our community about a recent Medicare fraud scheme involving urinary catheters and other medical supplies.

HOW THE SCAM WORKS
Scammers contact Medicare beneficiaries and offer “free” urinary catheters or other medical supplies. These contacts may come through phone calls, text messages, online advertisements or social media and email or mail offers.

WHAT THEY WILL ASK FOR
The caller may falsely claim to represent Medicare, a medical supplier or a healthcare provider. They typically will ask for personal information such as your Medicare number, your date of birth or other identifying information.

WARNING SIGNS OF THIS SCAM
Be cautious if you receive unsolicited offers for medical supplies, especially if someone promises “free” catheters or supplies, says they just need your Medicare number to send them, claims the offer is approved by Medicare or pressures you to respond quickly.

REMEMBER
Medicare typically does not call beneficiaries to offer free medical equipment.

Once scammers obtain this information, they may bill Medicare for medical supplies you never ordered, needed or received.

Medicare fraud can have several impacts: fraudulent charges may appear on your Medicare Summary Notice or Explanation of Benefits; your Medicare information could be used for ongoing fraudulent billing; your personal information could be used for identity theft or additional scams.

If you believe your Medicare information has been used fraudulently, you can report it to the HHS-OIG Fraud Hotline at 1-800-447-8477 or online at https://bit.ly/2Xmhrl0.

For help identifying and reporting suspicious claims, contact the Mississippi Senior Medicare Patrol at 877-272-8720 or online at https://bit.ly/3Pm0nr9.

If you suspect your Medicare information has been compromised, you may want to contact Medicare and request a new Medicare number to prevent further misuse.

Brooke S. Fryfogle, FNP, a nurse practitioner with Hattiesburg Clinic Gastroenterology – Hospital Care, ran the Hattiesburg Half Marathon/10k/5k for the health benefits.

“I decided to run the 5k because I had been trying to improve my physical health for several months and thought that signing up for this race would be an excellent motivator,” she said. “I was also fortunate enough to win an entry through work, which encouraged me because I was hesitant about participating at first. I invited my sister-in-law to run with me, and we had the best time.”
