The Children's Center for Communication and Development

The Children's Center for Communication and Development The Children's Center at Southern Miss provides comprehensive early intervention services to infants, toddlers and preschoolers with complex disabilities.

The Children's Center has been bringing brighter futures to children with complex disabilities since 1974. From humble beginnings to the transdisciplinary program that it is today, one thing has remained constant – the level of commitment on the part of the staff to make a difference in a child’s life. The Children’s Center was built on the notion that every child should have access to the joys (and trials) of life, daily opportunities (and responsibilities), and the chance to build a bright, beautiful future. The specialists at The Center spend their days working to make this vision a reality. Children enrolled at The Children’s Center present a wide variety of special needs and diagnoses, including (but not limited to) speech, hearing and language disorders, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, rare genetic disorders, or other conditions related to premature birth. What sets The Children’s Center apart from its counterparts is the way in which therapies are provided. Research has shown that early intervention is most successful when a comprehensive approach is taken toward a child’s development. What this means for the children enrolled in The Center is that the innovative therapies provided will be custom-fit to each child’s communication and developmental needs and delivered with a cohesive team approach. This team includes speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, special educators, behavioral therapists, and auditory-oral therapists. In addition to providing cost-free exemplary services to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with complex disabilities, The Children’s Center is also a preeminent research and training facility. By providing pre-professional training to students at USM and other universities and colleges in the areas of speech-language pathology, audiology, special education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, behavioral therapy, nursing, recreational therapy, and music therapy, The Children’s Center is helping to mold the next generation of committed specialists in Southern Mississippi and beyond.

‼️📣This just in! Play the Same has a NEW NAME! Our beloved bi-annual inclusive play event, hosted by Junior Auxiliary of Hattiesburg just got a makeover.

Back when it started in 2019, we named it Play the Same, with the thought that regardless of how children communicate or navigate the world around them, they all play the same - a universal language of sorts.

But that’s not really true. We play the same and we play differently. Just as with anything, SAME is not the goal, nor is it what we’re celebrating. We can play differently, and together. And the beauty lies in THAT.

Grab a shirt and join us and our friends at Junior Auxiliary of Hattiesburg in celebrating all ways of play!

🐎 Last week, we officially kicked off planning for our spring Kentucky Derby-themed event, Run for the Roses.

🦅 University partners came and helped us show our event committee members and ambassadors just how much they mean not only to us, but to Southern Miss.

🌹 Committee co-chair, board member, and former Children’s Center mama, Amanda Lee, talked about why she agreed to take on this role – a first-hand account of what it’s like to be on the other end of all of this, knowing your child and family are forever changed because of fundraisers just like this one.

🤝 We got to shake the hands of friends of The Children’s Center who have said “yes” once again – who have agreed, on top of already full lives, to step up and help in such a truly meaningful way.

🥂 We celebrated an event that began as an idea from the Roses - another family inspired by their little girl and the help she received within our walls and toasted the many folks who have helped this “idea” raise over $100K since its inception. And we left excited and humbled by the thought of where it will go from here.

🫶 We’re so thankful for this village, for the way they believe in the importance of the work that we do, and for the MANY ways they help us do it.

🗣️ If you’re interested in donating to or sponsoring this year’s event, which will again be graciously hosted at the home of the Worrel family in Hattiesburg, reach out to childrens.center@usm.edu.

Yesterday I visited and toured the . They had a kickoff event for one of the most anticipated events of the year, Run for the Roses.

My husband and I have loved being involved with this event, and we’re excited to play a bigger role this year. More to come on that very soon.

If you aren’t familiar with the Children’s Center, their mission is providing communicative and developmental transdisciplinary services to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers while educating, training and supporting families, university students, and professionals. Basically, they change lives, and due to this life changing work, they have a long waiting list of students.

I invite you to go on this journey with me, and my husband, as we share more information about the Children’s Center and what they do for parents & children in our area.❤️

Cade, The Children’s Center was proud of you 20 years ago, as a student receiving therapy within our walls, and all these years later, you continue to make us and those around you proud. We couldn’t think of a more humbly deserving recipient for MSHA’s Outstanding Student Clinician award. Bravo! 👏👏🌟

When that little boy on the wall isn’t so little anymore. 🥹🥰 We love when our babies come see us. And we will never not call them our babies (even when they’re taller than us).
