I wanted to share a great review we got on our Kanna Clarity formula.

"I've taken herbs for a number of things over the years and although I think they're great, I can't say I've ever felt too much of a difference in terms of their effects. Spencer had been telling me about a new herbal formula he was working on called Clarity that helped elevate your mood and manage stress. It sounded great so I decided to give it a try, taking 2 capsules per day. I was expecting to not feel much different (as I had with past herbs) and everyday I tried to listen to my body to see if anything seemed different. A couple of days went by and after several deadlines at work mixed with life with 2 busy kids, I realized the typical stress and anxiety I usually felt on a regular basis was completely gone. The only way I can think of to describe it is like putting a lid on a pot of boiling water. The stress would build and then just mellow out and kind of fade away, leaving me calm and focused and more able to accomplish tasks without completely losing it! I felt exactly like myself just more focused and in control emotionally and mentally. The other beautiful thing about Clarity is that I've actually stopped taking it and I still feel the positive effects. It's like it pushed my internal reset button and put me back in a good, calm place."-GB

Kanna! For all you science geeks out there, this is an interesting bit of research published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology on an amazing plant. Kanna has been used for centuries as a mood and clarity enhancing herb in South Africa. This study also shows it's ability to treat anxiety. I love Kanna, and I've seen it help so many people. Check out the research on http://www.nature.com/npp/journal/v38/n13/full/npp2013183a.html

Auricular (ear) acupuncture can be used to treat the entire body. In clinic I have observed that it seems to have a strong effect on the nervous system, which means it can be great for relaxation, working with the brain and hormones, and helping pain. The two most popular modern protocols are NADA, which is used to help people overcome addiction and relax the nervous system, and Battle Field Acupuncture, which is used by the US military to treat pain in clinics and on the front lines. I have undergone extensive training in auricular acupuncture and use it to assist in all kinds of treatments.

Don’t let pain slow you down or bring you down.

Pain can have profound effects on our own life, but it doesn’t stop there, these effects ripple outward through our responses to pain and impact our relationships and the world around us.

The effects of pain on our physical well-being are obvious, but it is also important to recognize that it can greatly effect our mental and emotional well-being.

Scientific research has begun to look at the complex web of interdependence between the physical stimulus of pain and our mental and emotional well-being. An example is research study done by a friend and patient of mine that found a strong relationship between pain and depression. Her study found that pain raises our cortisol levels (a stress hormone), and one of many negative responses to increased cortisol is often depression. With depression comes a whole host of potential symptoms including insomnia, anxiety, weight changes, and an increase of physical pain.

This relationship can easily become a vicious cycle of pain feeding depression and depression feeding pain.

Scientific research might be interesting, but most of us can connect to this relationship on a more immediate level. Anyone who has had either chronic or acute pain can confirm that there is a strong link between physical pain and depression, irritability, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and a whole range of other painful mental and emotional responses. For those of us who experience pain, this relationship also has the potentially to be liberating. It is important to remember that these painful responses not just emotional and mental patterns, but they have a physical aspect to them as well, they are also biological response to pain. This physiological response means we don’t have to consider them as permanent aspects of our selves, our personality, or “who we are”. Since they are a conditioned response, it means that they are something that we can change by addressing both the pain itself, and our body’s conditioned emotional and mental response to it.

Pain is a workable situation, and so is our mental and emotional response to it.

Oriental Medicine has been addressing the physical, mental and emotional aspects of pain for thousands of years. In modern times our treatments have become refined and informed by a scientific understanding of the body and mind. Research has proven its effectiveness in treating pain and helping manage emotional patterns such as stress, anxiety and depression. Some of the world’s top health research institutions such as the World Health Organization and the United States National Institute of Health have recognized the ability and importance of acupuncture in treating pain. Even the US military has instituted a program of “Battle-Field Acupuncture” to treat pain. There is no longer any rational doubt that acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can be a powerful tool to address pain.

With the tools of Oriental Medicine, including acupuncture and herbs, we can address the physical, mental and emotional aspects of pain.

Don’t let pain slow you down or bring you down. Let Oriental Medicine help you to live pain free, and better yet, to also be free from painful emotional and mental responses to life’s inevitable physical discomforts.

In other most awesome news, after 2 1/2 years of work, several successful projects, and a mountain of paperwork, Clear Stream Integrative Medicine was granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS.

We are now an official non-profit!

This means that all donations to our health and education projects are tax deductible in the USA.

It also means that we can apply for grants for our work.

And best of all, it means that we can continue to get support from the community through volunteers, donations, and the generous work of our Board of Directors.

Much gratitude to everyone who helped bring us to this milestone.
The best is yet to come.
We have a new project unfolding here in Cambodia, so stay tuned.

There are some very interesting ideas and research in this article. It is definitely worth a read. I have tasted natural spring water high in lithium, straight from the spring, and it did make me happy. Then again, I was soaking in springs all day so my experience is far from scientific. I have also had several patients and one student who have taken micro doses of lithium from natural spring water on a regular basis and all of them reported subtle mood improvement. I have also had many patients who have taken pharmaceutical Lithium prescribed by their Western medical doctors, and all of them struggled with side effects, even when it was helping with severe mood disorders. I don't think we should add it to public drinking water, but I do think we should explore the potential benefits from natural lithium concentrations in mineral spring water. Micro dosing of minerals and vitamins (through food, water and herbs) is how we have kept ourselves healthy through all of human history. Taking huge pharmaceutical doses is an incredibly recent development and has proven to often have dangerous side effects. So to me it only makes sense that we should do more research into simple natural solutions, like happy lithium mineral water.

Su***de seems to be less common where the lithium is more plentiful in drinking water.
