in 1883, Rebecca Crumpler was the first Black woman in America to earn an M.D. degree. She also wrote the 'Book of Medical Discourses', which is one of the first medical publications by an African American.

In 1981, Alexa Canady became the first Black, female neurosurgeon. She was the the chief of neurosurgery at The Children's Hospital of Michigan from 1987 to 2001.
