One of life’s ironies… Announcing my retirement....
Friends,
I write this letter today with a heavy heart as I announce, after 20 years of service, that I will be retiring from chiropractic practice and closing Mugavero Chiropractic by the end of October.
The physical demands of practicing chiropractic eventually catch up with many chiropractors. The awkward body postures required, the constant bending, along with the pounding thrusts into our patient’s spines, create numerous repetitive stress injuries in many different parts of the chiropractor’s body. I have done my best to stay in halfway decent shape over the past 20 years in order to be able to help as many people as I possibly could.
I have been able to use my own advice to manage my ailments over the years and have been able to recover between my workdays. Over the past 2 or 3 years I have not been recovering as well. At this point, I am causing damage to my body, and it is having a negative impact on my activities of daily living and the enjoyment of my family and personal life. And, to add insult to injury, a recent rear-end collision while at the go-kart track with my kids, has made matters worse. Both of my physicians agree that continuing to practice would not be wise. Although I can (occasionally) be a little stubborn, I am not willing to risk my long-term well-being and go against their stern advice.
If you had asked me just a few weeks ago I would have told you my plan was to practice for 10 more years until the age of 60, however, that is not going to be possible. My next plan was to bring in a new chiropractor and sell the practice to him or her once my patients felt comfortable. Unfortunately, the owner of my office building has refused to lease the office space to a new chiropractor as he claims he has other plans for the property.
I will be leaving you in the good hands of some of the area’s best and most respected chiropractors…stay tuned for more information about that.
I am so very grateful for all of you (new and old) that have entrusted me with the privilege of working on your body in order to help. It’s quite a thing to have a complete stranger lay down in front of you on a funny looking table and allow you to work on them. It’s humbling, to say the least… I have done the best job I could… for as many people as I could… for as long as I could…and for that I am proud!
My small, but indispensable staff, has made everything possible. My mother, Maureen, has been around almost as long as myself. She has handled MANY aspects of the inner workings of the practice and has dealt with the frustrations of the insurance companies with grace. Her work ethic is undeniable, and patients were often surprised when she answered the phone late in the evening or on a Sunday afternoon! Julie has become the familiar, friendly face at the front desk and on the phone. She joined Maureen and I nearly 9 years ago and immediately took initiative and brought a certain level of control to the chaos of a busy practice. Both of these amazing people helped to make my dream a reality. To say I couldn’t have done it without them is a major understatement!
We will continue to serve you until late October, if at all possible. However, we will not be accepting anymore new patients. Any account credits on our end will be handled appropriately and we kindly ask that any outstanding account balances please be handled on your end.
Beginning in November, I will be shifting gears and focusing on a far less physically demanding job. I will be working out of my Reading, MA office (New England DOT Physicals, Inc. 274 Main Street, Suite 308. Phone # 781-944-5400) where I will continue to only perform DOT Physical exams. Anyone who needs a DOT physical is more than welcome to schedule an appointment there.
Once again, I want to thank each and every one of you for being a part of the dream I’ve had since the age of 13! It has been an amazing career and I can only hope my life’s work has had a positive impact on you. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Dr. Mugavero
