This article describes a very new study from University Hospitals Connor Whole Health, in Cleveland Ohio, that tests the benefits of music therapy for acute pain and anxiety management amongst patients admitted for pancreatic surgeries. Many patients who undergo pancreatic surgery have heightened anxiety and significant post-surgical pain, which is treated in this study with live music-assisted relaxation and imagery. This study is one of the first to be conducted on this specific subject and was recently published in Global Advances in Integrative Medicine and Health.

HAPPY DIWALI 2025

Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, is a five-day autumn festival celebrated by billions worldwide, primarily Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and some Buddhists. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, with people decorating their homes with lamps called diyas and creating colorful floor designs called rangolis. The festival also features family gatherings, feasts with sweets, fireworks, and prayers to deities such as Lakshmi (goddess of wealth) and Ganesh (god of wisdom).

The parachute is an engaging tool used in many music therapy sessions, bringing energy, movement, and fun to group activities. You might see our therapists using it in all kinds of creative ways—lifting it to make waves, bouncing soft items like stress balls on top, or walking in a circle to music to build spatial awareness. Parachute activities support important goals like turn-taking, joint attention, cooperative play, and socialization. They also encourage both gross motor skills, like lifting and shaking with coordinated movement, and fine motor skills, such as grasping and releasing the handles. The movement and texture of the parachute provide valuable sensory input that can help with regulation and overall body awareness. Whether we’re shaking to a fast beat or swaying together in slow motion, the parachute helps turn music into a shared, engaging experience that builds meaningful interactions and supports a wide range of developmental goals.

Leo has been attending music therapy at MusicWorks since July 2024. In such a short time, Leo has made great strides towards his goals in music therapy sessions. He has become a more active participant while playing instruments and in interactions with his peers. Leo is now more receptive to prompting from the MT to give high fives to his peers, share instruments, and takes turns. In particular, Leo's expressive communication has flourished as he has begun learning to use an AAC device. Leo is able to request comfort items to support self-regulation, ask for breaks, and greet Mom and his peers. In recent months, Leo's verbal communication has also shown improvement by saying "Hi" to the group while singing the “Hello Song”. His bright spirit and excitement for the music therapy sessions brings smiles to everyone in the group! We are so glad to have Leo at MusicWorks.
