Guess which one lasts longer??

Even if something is structurally damaged or worn out, seeing a physical therapist first can help decrease pain and improve your strength going into surgery!

BUT WHAT IF.... and stay with us here.... what if you try PT.... and it takes your pain away, therefore, you end up NOT NEEDING SURGERY!!?? How awesome would that be!?

Don't let that MRI scare you!

Yes, MRI's can be a very helpful tool in diagnosing a problem, such as torn muscle or damage to a disc... but the results can also scare the daylights out of us!
Even if you have a torn muscle or a disc issue, PT can still help to get rid of your pain. You are not broken! We can't cure a muscle tear, but you can for sure strengthen all of the muscles around it to support the joint, get rid of your pain and help you learn how to avoid pain in the future!!!

the answer is FALSE

this may come as a shock to you, but there have been multiple studies conducted over the years (long term) that have found there is no significant link between knuckle cracking and arthritis!!

🤍the cracking you hear comes from gas being forced out of the joint fluid... not bones actually cracking.
🤍excessive cracking can cause some temporary discomfort or swelling if you are aggressive, however it does not cause long term damage.
🤍cracking does not "loosen" your joints. it may feel good momentarily but the stiffness will return.

Arthritis is typically caused by overuse and joint wear and tear over time.

Fun fact Friday! 🌈
Did you know that your brain can feel pain even when there is no "injury"?? This is why pain doesn't always mean something is "broken", and why PT WORKS!! Things like chronic pain are not "just in your head"... they're in your nervous system!

Sometimes when the body is healing, it will send signals to the brain that may be misinterpreted by the brain as "pain". PT often times helps retrain your brain, and teaches it that the sensations it is feeling is not pain, but healing!! It helps silence that "pain signal" coming from muscles. give us a call so we can help OVERRIDE those pain signals.

Here are 5 easy ways to strengthen your shoulders with a resistance band at home

1. Band pull aparts- stand or sit upright. Bring your arms to shoulder height. Pull your hands apart and slowly back together.
2. Banded external rotation- Keeping the elbows in at your sides, bring your hands apart and slowly back together.
3. Bicep curls- Stand on one end of the band and hold the other in your hand. Slowly curl your elbow and slowly back down.
4. Tricep extensions- Anchor the band with your opposite arm up at the shoulder. Use the other hand to pull the arm down and up.
5. Posture rows- Anchor the band on a doorknob in your home and shut the door. Hold both ends of the band and pull your elbows back, squeeze together your shoulder blades and slowly release.

DID YOU KNOW... your muscles don't actually turn into fat when you stop working out??

It is a huge misconception and often a rumor that if you don't work out, your muscles turn to fat... this is completely FALSE.

Muscles and fat are composed of completely different material. When you don't work out, your muscles "atrophy", which basically means they lose mass. This may give the appearance that your muscles have turned to fat, but in reality, you just have less muscle mass, so fat is more apparent.
Muscle give you "tone", and fat is a bit more "jiggly"😆

"what is this exercise even doing for me??"
We get this question a lot and it is very valid!!
Sometimes it may feel frustrating to be doing something so simple such as getting out of a chair, pressing weights overhead, or even trying some balance exercises. You may feel like "why do I need to do this it's too simple for me".
But lets not confuse simple and easy. If something is too easy, you may be ready for some heavier weights, but just because something feels simple does not mean it should not be done!!
FUNCTIONAL exercise is very important. "Walking a tightrope" exercise might make you feel silly, however it is a FANTASTIC way to strengthen your ankles and proprioception. Sit to stands may seem simple and silly, but it's such a great functional exercise that will eventually prepare you for squatting!!

Please never stop asking "why am I doing this?". Our therapists love answering that question and are fully of knowledge they would love to share with YOU.

"It's just arthritis."

We could bet a lot of you have heard that line before... "its JUST arthritis... nothing is wrong with you"

But even "just" arthritis is very painful to most!
So, what is arthritis??

Arthritis is inflammation in your joints. It is caused by degeneration of the nice cushions between your joints, which then causes your bones to rub on each other causing pain, inflammation, bone spurs etc.
It usually occurs first in the joints that have been injured in the past (but not always). Once it starts, it can spread to other joints and worsens over time.
Think of it like rust on a car. If you have a dent in your car, it is likely that area will rust first and then begin to spread.
Like rust on a car, arthritis cannot be fully cured, however the symptoms can be managed with physical therapy!!!
