Personal Record [PR] Running Tips ➡️ How to become faster and break your personal record!

1️⃣ Train yourself to finish strong during your PR running race. If you want to be able to have a strong kick at the finish line, you need to be practicing for it during your training runs! Include a series of 3-5 strides at the end of your run.

2️⃣ Include speed training intervals that have you running about 4-5 miles at 5 seconds faster than your desired race pace and resting for about a couple minutes between each interval. EXAMPLE: if you want to run to break 50 minutes in the 10K your race pace would be about 8 minutes per mile.

3️⃣ Don't turn sharp on the corners. It's best to also find the straightest possible race course for PR seekers. During the race if you do come upon some sharp corners or twists, try to stay in a straight path [even if it means taking a diagonal cut to the next bend in the road].

Strength training is important for preventing sarcopenia, age-related loss of muscle mass that can make everyday tasks more difficult. It helps to keep bones strong by stressing them more your typical daily activities, stimulating bone cells, and ultimately warding off osteoporosis!

Hip hinges, core work, push and pulls, squats, lunges, and carrying anything that requires some stamina and strength are great ways to keep your muscles working.

Did you know meditation can help control pain and decrease blood pressure? You read that right. Your perception of pain is connected to your state of mind, and it can be elevated in stressful conditions. For example, one review of 38 studies concluded that mindfulness meditation could reduce pain, improve quality of life, and decrease symptoms of depression in people with chronic pain.

Meditation can also improve physical health by reducing strain on the heart. This practice helps to control blood pressure by relaxing the nerve signals that coordinate heart function, blood vessel tension, and the “fight-or-flight” response that increases alertness in stressful situations.

The bottom line is meditation is something everyone can do to improve their mental and emotional health. And the beauty is you can do it anywhere, without special equipment or memberships.

Fitness Over 40 ➡️ The longer we stay active, the longer we remain able to stay active. Follow these fitness tips as you enter middle age and your body will thank you!

Don't Skip the Warmup ➡️ As we age, our muscles and tendons become less flexible and more subject to injury. A solid 10- to 15-minute warmup of light motion is key.

Flexibility is Important ➡️ Flexible muscles and resilient joints will prevent you from sustaining a sidelining injury you may not fully recover from. The best way to ensure them is to build in a cooldown stretching routine lasting 10 to 20 minutes at the end of your workout.

Don't Ignore Pain ➡️ If you experience pain, go get it checked out. The days of “walking it off” or “no pain, no gain” are behind us! Pain can instead be a warning that we’re about to get broken.

Mind What You Eat ➡️ Fuel yourself with the right balance of whole grains, protein, veggies, and fruits to stay energized and strong. Be sure you’re getting enough of the right nutrients, whether from food, protein powders, or supplements.
