This February, Richstone would like to draw attention to Teen Dating Violence Prevention Month. In a 2021 study, 1 in 12 teens reported experiencing physical dating violence, and 1 in 10 teens reported experiencing sexual dating violence. Behaviors that teens may find “normal” can actually be indicative of larger issues within a relationship.
Intimate partner violence can include physical and sexual violence, psychological aggression, stalking, and more. Teens who experience teen dating violence can be more likely to experience depression, anxiety, unhealthy coping mechanisms, isolation, antisocial behaviors, and suicidal ideation.
Warning signs of an unhealthy relationship include:
1. Someone controlling their partners independence, time, self-expression, etc.
2. Disrespecting boundaries of physical touch, time, privacy, etc.
3. Being demeaning and harming a person’s self-esteem
4. Manipulating using anger and guilt
5. Isolating a person from their family and friends
If you have noticed this in your relationships or see it in others and need immediate help, call 800-799-SAFE (7233). For more information on teen dating violence, visit teendvmonth.org.
