when i opened Skin & Tonic 7 years ago, i received a generous tip from a longtime client:

a blueberry bush.

this beautiful bush has provided berries since the beginning, but she’s also had some years that were a little less productive.

it feels so aligned with life as a business owner.

some years are fruitful and the fruit produces with ease, while others you have to adjust a bit.

have we outgrown the container we started out in?

have we added support in the many forms it comes?

have we pruned away the things that could be holding us back from our true expansion + growth?

many indigenous cultures believe blueberries to be a divine gift.

blueberries are associated with spiritual wisdom and seen as an act of communion with the divine. they provide insight, clarity, and a deeper connection to your inner self.

blueberries encompass emotional resilience + strength, while also helping to overcome challenges + adversity.

these dark hued beauties have been linked with spiritual growth + transformation, reminding us that personal growth takes time, patience, and perseverance.

it’s been 7 years of growth + expansion for both the blueberry bush and skin & tonic.

who could have guessed a blueberry bush would be such a thoughtful and perfectly paired gift for a new business 🫐😉🫐

i have made my way into a new era:

ma’am.

i suppose it’s deserved, i’m in my 40’s.

the thing is, i don’t feel like a ma’am.

i had an experience with a new client 10 years ago. I called her ma’am as i was bringing her back for her appointment and she very sharply replied;

“do i look like a ma’am to you? my mother is a ma’am!”

🫣😬

needless to say that was her one and only appointment with me and that is ok. she had a huge impact on how i would address women going forward.

“miss” is widely accepted and appreciated in my experience. the smiles i get from women are contagious and full of a youthful glimmer.

it’s no secret that i have always looked forward to aging and being a crone, but I’ll be the first to admit that being called ma’am has taken some adjusting. I just don’t feel like a ma’am.

ma’am is an interesting word. while i’m not entirely certain the origin is completely harmless, it was to signify respect, a woman of superior social status, or a woman who was married.

for a word that was intended to show respect, it sure does have the power to offend (although i understand that depends on where you were born and raised.)

while ma’am doesn’t offend me, it does have me looking around, wondering who they’re talking to 🙃

what is your experience with the word ma’am? do you appreciate it? does it make you feel some kind of way? have you accidentally offended someone referring to them as ma’am? do you think it’s harmless and people are too sensitive? are you personally offended by the word and it’s implications to ageism against women?

we spend our lives searching for meaning in ourselves, engaged in deep conversations with our ‘inner child’, meditating on a mat indoors, trained to be ever-mindful of what’s going on inside us — our breath and our thoughts and emotions — when so much of the meaning we need is beneath our feet, in the plants and animals around us, in the air we breathe.

we swaddle ourselves so tightly in the centrality of our own self-referential humanness that we forget that we are creatures of the earth, and need also to connect with the land.

a week away in the forest to celebrate my own aging process.

crystal clear lakes. rivers full of spawning salmon. the light drizzle of a rainforest. socializing with the local seals in the ocean. the connection between steps + breath while climbing steep trails. the sweet sweet smell of ancient trees. no longer knowing if your soaked from coastal rain or sweat. soaking tired bodies in hot springs.

it was a beautiful beginning to this next chapter of life 🌲

there’s no rush in getting to this space.

take your time.

take a deep, calming, intentional breath.

if you’re stuck in traffic, a meeting ran late, or you needed an extra moment to prepare yourself for your appointment, know that that’s ok.

so much in this world is rushed, hurried, and chaotic, but that is not how this space flows.

it’s slow. gentle. calm.

this space is here to make room for a quiet moment, relax your nervous system, and support your mind•body•spirit.

we may need to travel a long distance before we find the new skin that fits us, and before we can learn to be comfortable in it, we have to commit ourselves to the journey.

we have to awaken from our torpor, commit to life instead of the desiccated half-life of the wasteland.

we must shake off the false skins we’ve cloaked ourselves in; we must let the old die to make room for the new.

we must be willing to detach from who we have been, what we have become, before we can discover who we are really meant to be and what our work is in the world.

to work in the garden you need to be there in the garden.

being present in the garden, you’re able to take care of the different flowers, trees, and vegetables, and such a garden can nourish you and make your life more beautiful.

if anything’s become wilted, broken, or rotten, we can help it transform and become compost that can nourish the trees and flowers.

the gardener needs to take care of the garden.

what is garden?

the garden is our body, our feelings, our perceptions, our other mental formations, and our consciousness.

6 years ago skin & tonic opened it’s doors.

naming a business is a lot of pressure. you want it to be good. memorable. representative of what it is you offer. it’s a lot, or at least for me it was.

thankfully I had some feedback (and a bottle of wine) and landed on what is now, skin & tonic.

my original name ideas were panacea skin care studio or voodoo skincare studio. my friend helping me with my logo said “people are going to think you are selling cured meats, donuts, or the devil. no. “

🤣🥓🍩👹😂

i am forever grateful for his honest feedback, but now i have a nameless studio. back to the drawing board.

enter full bottle of wine (🤷🏻‍♀️)

i had a yellow note pad, thesaurus, and a bottle of red wine. i wrote down words that resonated with me and the business i was opening.

it was much like my mind at times, words everywhere, messy, and crowded. one of the words I looked up in the thesaurus was remedy (a friend of mines studio name💛) and i saw the word “tonic “. it captured my attention so I wrote it down.

at this point my red wine is almost gone. it’s late. i’m hunched over, writing down different variations of names; mixing, matching, blurry eyed. more than tipsy.

that’s when I see it. they’re moving in slow motion, these two random words, slurring closer and closer to each other.

SKIN & TONIC

they collide into each other as if old friends. they say hello. shake hands. make a commitment to one another.

the rest is history.

skin & tonic was born from a night with a lot of words and a lot of wine.

it’s cool how things work out. 6 years ago i was still practicing traditional skincare, but i feel like my business name foreshadowed what was to come 🌱

so many changes. so much growth. so much education and learning. so much unlearning. so much seeking and finding. so much love and support.

so, there you have it. a short and inebriated story of how came to be.

cheers 🍷🌱

something mystical can happen to the mind + heart when we intersect with nature.

humans are surrounded by man-made buildings, objects, and environments, and it can become harder and harder to remember our intimate relationship with this beautiful blue planet.

but magic can happen in the fleeting moments in which we notice the natural world— the sunset that causes us to catch our breath, the murmur of wind rustling through trees, the sharp, clean smell of rain on grass or the tang of salty air near a shore, the feel of sand or dirt underfoot.

these moments reconnect us not only to nature, but also to our own nature; they carry with them the recognition that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

Thank you for making me feel good — happy client

As a sweet soul walked out of the studio yesterday, they turned around and said these words to me.

The emotion behind these words were raw. They were real. Their voice trembled as if they were holding back tears.

It’s tough out in the world some days. Shoot, maybe a lot of days.

This kind of response is what gets me. It’s part of why I do what I do.

It’s not how you look (that’s an added bonus 😉) but, how you FEEL.

Let your body soften into the warm table. Allow that tension to ease. Let your mind go on a mystic journey. Release the stress you’re holding in those facial muscles. Give your nervous system some time to soak in the calm.

How you feel when you leave this space matters most to me.

mind + body + spirit.
