Now, everyone from the local NICU that’s caring for underweight babies, to the foster family taking in a newborn, is having a hard time getting their hands on what many call “liquid gold.”

👶🏼 Paced Bottle Feeding 👶🏼

Paced feeding is a technique used to mimic the rhythm of feeding at the breast. Feeding this way can help allow baby to pace their own feed and not under/overeat, use the proper muscles for oral development, minimize GI distress, and is less stressful for baby. To pace bottle feed:

🍼 Position baby in an upright incline position
🍼 Keep the bottle parallel to the floor; the ni**le should be approximately half full of milk or formula
🍼 Use a slow flow or newborn ni**le
🍼 Allow baby to latch to the ni**le; don’t just insert the bottle in the baby’s mouth
🍼 Corkscrew once latched to ensure a deep, fully flanged latch
🍼 Take short breaks, about every half ounce, to burp baby
🍼 Switch sides to lay baby on their other side halfway through the feeding
🍼 Watch your baby for cues that they are finished or need to take a break

💙 Friendly reminder: generally babies need approximately 1 to 1.25 ounces per hour 💙
