Did you know? Being pregnant with twins can sometimes cause a false negative pregnancy test.

This rare situation—called the “hook effect”—happens when hCG hormone levels are so high that they overwhelm the test, preventing it from detecting the pregnancy.

The “hook effect” (also called the high-dose hook effect or prozone effect) is a rare phenomenon in pregnancy testing where very high levels of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) cause a false-negative or weakly positive result. This rare event can happen with:

• Multiple gestation (twins/triplets)
• Gestational trophoblastic disease (e.g., molar pregnancy)
• Rare hCG-secreting tumors

If you’ve missed periods, have pregnancy symptoms, or recently went through IVF but your test is still negative, it’s important to follow up with a medical provider. In some cases, additional testing may be needed for confirmation.
