HaysMed is a 200+ bed hospital providing the only tertiary-level services in the region.

As the premier provider in western Kansas for specialized care, HaysMed offers a wide variety of specialty programs. Hays Medical Center is a private, not-for-profit hospital formed by the 1991 merger of two religiously affiliated facilities, and provides the only tertiary level services in the region. The organization's Vision Statement, developed collaboratively with local and regional physicians, hospital administrators and community board representatives, was refined to a single core purpose: "To Help People Be Healthy," and an overriding goal: "To Be the Best Tertiary Care Center in Rural America."

As we step into a new year, let’s make 2026 a year of gratitude. At the Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute, we are continually inspired by the strength and resilience of those we serve. Today, we’re honored to share a heartfelt message from a patient who experienced compassionate care from Dr. Tahn and our team. Their words remind us of the power of kindness and community in the healing journey. 💙

"Dear Dr. Tahn,

I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks for everything you've done for me. Your kindness, support, and encouragement have made a profound difference in my life, and I truly appreciate the time and energy you have given so selflessly. Whether it was your truthful words during difficult moments or your unwavering presence when I needed guidance, you have shown me what true belief in God and your HANDS means.

Tomorrow, January 1 from 10 a.m.–Noon CST, the Rose Parade will once again shine a spotlight on the incredible gift of life. HaysMed is proud to partner with Midwest Transplant Network by contributing a signed rose vial to the OneLegacy Donate Life Rose Parade Float.

This heartfelt gesture honors organ and tissue donors and their families while raising awareness about the life-saving impact of donation.

The 2025 float theme, “Treasure Every Moment Together,” beautifully reminds us of the precious moments made possible through donation.

A bell of hope rings at HaysMed!

For 14 months, Garry Allen fought bladder cancer with incredible strength and determination. Alongside his wife, Lauri, Garry traveled from Garden City to HaysMed for care from our amazing Urology team.

In a truly generous gesture, the Allen family donated a beautiful bell inscribed with: “You are a Survivor. Final Treatment.” This bell now stands as a symbol of hope for patients completing their treatment journey.

Last week, Garry had the honor of ringing the bell himself, surrounded by the team who supported him every step of the way. In some of the photos, you’ll see members of Garry’s HaysMed Urology team, including Dr. Ernesto Lopez-Corona, Christina Schmidt, APRN, Caitlin Gabel, APRN, and Danielle VonFeldt, APRN, along with Garry and his wife, Lauri Allen.

It was a moment of joy and gratitude! Thank you, Garry and Lauri, for your kindness and for giving future patients a way to celebrate their victories. And thank you for trusting HaysMed to walk beside you.

Gina, a nurse in our Progressive Care Unit, has been honored with the DAISY Foundation Award for Extraordinary Nurses! Gina provides specialized care for patients who require close monitoring and advanced support, bridging the gap between intensive care and general medical care.
