Many of us think, “I experimented and turned out fine.”

But today’s world isn’t the one we grew up in.

• THC potency has increased dramatically
• Ni****ne products are more discreet and flavored
• Social media normalizes risky behavior
• Mental health pressures are heavier than ever

This doesn’t mean we need to panic as parents. We need to adapt.

💭 Parents: What’s one thing about your teen's world that feels most different from when you were growing up?

Many parents say, “My kids are too young to hear about drugs or alcohol.”

But research shows children as young as 9 already view alcohol more positively, and thousands of kids try ma*****na before their teens.

The question isn’t if the conversation should happen. It’s how and when.

💭 Let’s talk about it:
At what age do you think conversations about substances should start? And what makes that age feel right to you?

From front desk to senior leadership, Lenee’s journey at Horizon spans over two decades of dedication, growth, and heart. 💙

She began as an Administrative Assistant in 2001, bringing customer service skills from the corporate world and a gift for helping others. Since then, she’s worn many hats, offered steady guidance to new hires, and made safety a top priority across every site.

Now serving as Associate Director of Facilities and Site Safety, Lenee continues to be a voice for staff and a champion for safe, supportive spaces where healing can happen.

We’re grateful for leaders like Lenee who lead with care and consistency.

It’s not always about peer pressure or experimentation. The strongest predictor of future substance misuse is often what people carry with them... unresolved trauma, chronic stress, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).

These early experiences can shape the brain’s stress response, impact emotional regulation, and increase vulnerability to substance misuse later in life.

At Horizon, we take a trauma-informed approach to treatment because we know substance use doesn’t happen in a vacuum, it’s often rooted in something deeper.

💬 How do you think our communities can better respond to the trauma that leads to addiction?

We’re proud to share that Horizon Treatment Services was ranked #1 for positive feedback in 2025 among Pulse for Good's Behavioral Health clients, according to their impact report! 💙

This recognition comes from year-long client feedback compiled in Pulse For Good’s 2025 Impact Report, insights that help guide how we listen, learn, and improve.

Closing the feedback loop means making real changes, big and small, so the people we serve feel heard and respected. And that commitment continues to shape how we move forward.

We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to share their voice.

Our walls are a visual reminder that progress is possible, even when it feels slow.

How would you describe the path to healing in one word? 💙

What started in the medicine cabinet has turned into a national crisis.

In this episode, addiction expert Dr. Andrew Kolodny joins us to break down how the opioid epidemic evolved, from overprescribing to the deadly rise of illicit fentanyl.

We explore the demographics hit hardest, the pharmaceutical practices that helped fuel the fire, and why harm reduction and integrated care must be at the center of our response.

Dr. Kolodny also challenges the idea that economic despair is the only driver of this crisis, reminding us that real solutions require access to treatment, empathy, and systems built on science, not stigma.

💬 What would a more compassionate approach to addiction treatment look like in your community?

What happens when someone walks into care and doesn’t understand the language, or the system around them?

In this episode of the Horizon podcast, Roland Williams and Jen Slusser-MacTernan unpack what it really takes to create healthcare environments that are inclusive, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed.

They dive into the real work behind CLAS (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services), not just as a checklist, but as a way of honoring lived experience, building trust, and ultimately improving outcomes.

This one’s for the providers, policy thinkers, and community builders who believe that belonging is a prerequisite for healing.

🎧 Listen and let us know: What’s one step you’ve seen make care more equitable in your setting?

Parenting a young person navigating questions about identity, mental health, or substance use can feel overwhelming. You want to be their safe place, but sometimes, they want to talk to someone else.

That doesn’t mean you’ve failed. And they have somewhere to go where they’re seen, respected, and held without judgment.

At Project Eden, we create that space for LGBTQIA+ youth and their allies to ask questions, process feelings, and just be themselves.

When a teen opens up about substance use, your reaction matters more than you think.

It’s natural to feel scared, disappointed, or unsure of what to say. But those first few moments set the tone.

The most effective response? ⤵️
Stay calm. Ask open-ended questions. Listen without judgment.

That doesn’t mean ignoring the seriousness of what they’re sharing. It means creating space to understand what’s underneath it without shutting down the conversation before it starts.

At Horizon, we work with families to build trust, even in tough moments. Because curiosity leads to connection, and connection opens the door to change.

If you’re a parent, caregiver, or educator, what’s one thing you wish you’d known about talking to teens about substance use?
