“Accessibility is not simply about accommodations. It’s about disability justice. It’s about normalizing the multiple ways that folks exist in & interface with the world. It’s so much more than a “nice” practice or legal requirement. It’s an ethical responsibility for us all.“

"...What is needed are executive orders and legislation to push schools and districts to help special education students get the support they need during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a list of recommendations from 15 disability rights groups sent last week to Gov. Gavin Newsom and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond."

The California Department of Education has provided guidance for districts, schools, teachers and parents of students in special education.

What has your experience been?

“COVID-19 has impacted the disabled community in many ways,” England said. “I don’t think I could possibly capture it all. It has impacted the way they live, work, and play. It has impacted how they obtain services, where they obtain services, and has interrupted medical care. For some it has meant a complete change of life.”

Some forward movement for the juvenile detention system! A small step, but a step nonetheless.
"Under the terms of the settlement, the county will transition its three juvenile facilities from a corrections model to a treatment model, which will aim to ensure youths with disabilities are identified and housed in a safe and homelike environment, and given equal access to educational and rehabilitative programs.

Kern County has settled a class-action lawsuit filed by two disability rights groups that challenged alleged discrimination against disabled youth took place at the county’s juvenile detention facilities.

Ever since the beginning of this pandemic, we've known group housing would be the most vulnerable- that includes prisons.

Advocates for disabled California prison inmates are asking the state to require guards to wear body cameras, citing dozens of new court declarations describing alleged abuses that they should compel the corrections department to carry out policy changes.

This pandemic is the perfect time to address housing inequity!

"For millions of disabled people and their families, the coronavirus crisis has piled on new difficulties and ramped up those that already existed. Many are immunocompromised and therefore more vulnerable to infection, but terrified of new coronavirus-era hospital guidelines they fear could put them at risk."

"Disabled people including myself have long campaigned for accommodations to help us live our lives. The COVID-19 pandemic shows that these are not as impractical as we have always been told. Supermarkets, restaurants and pharmacies (even outside cities) can deliver; remote working, medicine and education are possible for many; and social lives can be rewarding without requiring us to leave home."

The pandemic’s disruption shows how much academia could learn from the disability community.

“The share of COVID-19 related deaths in care homes - where older people with disabilities are overrepresented - ranges from 19 per cent to an astonishing 72 per cent”.

The COVID-19 pandemic is intensifying inequalities experienced by the world’s one billion people with disabilities, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in launching a report issued on Wednesday that calls for a disability-inclusive recovery and response to the crisis.
